Amerks Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Comets
November 8, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Despite a two-point night from Luke Adam, the Rochester Americans fell behind by two goals in the second period and could not overcome the deficit as the Amerks dropped a 3-2 decision to the league-leading Utica Comets Saturday night at The Blue Cross Arena. The loss extends Rochester's winless streak to four games and moves the Amerks' record to 6-6-0-0 on the season.
Adam finished with a goal and an assist, while Zac Dalpe added his third goal of the season late in the final period. Andrey Makarov started in net for the Amerks and had 30 saves as his record dropped to 3-2-0 on the season.
Former Amerk Jacob Markstrom continued his strong play for the Comets, stopping 33 of Rochester's 35 shots for his sixth win of the season. Wacey Hamilton had a goal and an assist, while Ronalds Kenins and Bobby Sanguinetti added tallies.
The Amerks nearly jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period when Mikhail Grigorenko skated into the Utica zone on a 2-on-1, but his high shot flew over the net to keep the game scoreless. Rochester had plenty of other chances during the opening period, but came away empty-handed despite winning the shot battle 15-8.
Utica stormed out to a two-goal lead in the second period off of Hamilton and Kenins' goals. The first, scored by Hamilton just 52 seconds into the middle frame, was a bank shot from behind the net that hopped off Makarov's leg and into the net. The second came on a power-play opportunity when Kenins sniffed out a rebound and slammed it home, putting Utica ahead by two goals.
Looking to put a dent into Utica's two-goal lead, Adam tried a back-door pass to Phil Varone in front of the net, but the puck took a fortunate bounce off a defender's skate and in. The goal continued a successful run against the Comets for Adam, who has now scored seven goals in 11 career games against the Comets.
The Comets would retain their two-goal advantage on another power-play goal, this time scored by Sanguinetti from the top of the circle. However, with 3:04 left in regulation Adam would take matters into his own hands, circling around the outside of Utica's zone before flipping a backhander on net. With Varone and Dalpe both setting a screen, Adam's shot was tipped by Dalpe past Markstrom.
Trailing by a goal with 1:47 remaining in the third period, the Amerks called a timeout and pulled Makarov for the extra attacker. Rochester had plenty of chances in a chaotic final minute, including a point-blank slap-shot from Grigorenko, but Markstrom shut the door for the Comets, who stretched their point streak to nine straight games.
The Amerks are back in action on Monday, Nov. 10 when they host the Adirondack Flames on Military Appreciation Night at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will be the fourth of 12 meetings between the North Division rivals this season and will be carried live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
