Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 3-2 Friday evening at the New England Sports Center in their preseason opener. The P-Bruins had goals from Calle Ridderwall, Zach Hamill, and Everett Sheen.
The Falcons controlled the opening minutes of the first period, pressing the P-Bruins defense deep in their own zone. Providence's offense was undeterred as they pressed on, connecting passes in the neutral zone to set up plays in front of Paul Dainton. Springfield's frustrations rose and play started to get chippy. However, it was Providence that capitalized on a Springfield power play when rookie Ridderwall connected on a pass from Trent Whitfield at 15:44.
Providence continued to press the Springfield squad, causing defensive and neutral zone turnovers. Despite many offensive rushes and interceptions, Dainton was solid between the pipes and stalwarted any Providence scoring opportunities, sending Providence into the second intermission leading 1-0.
Springfield came out of the locker room flying and Denny Kearney put the Falcons on the board just 27 seconds into the third frame. The scoring surge was short as Hamill answered nearly a minute later to give the P-Bruins the one-goal lead. After back and forth play over the next eight minutes, Andrew Joudrey tied it up for the Falcons at 9:12. The P-Bruins' offense answered with multiple opportunities, like an end-to-end rush from Yannick Riendeau and a near wrap-around from rookie Craig Cunningham. Dainton was solid in net and forced the teams to head to overtime.
The play went back and forth in the start of the five minute overtime period, but at 2:23 Everett Sheen, a recent graduate of Holy Cross, scored the game-winner for the P-Bruins in front of friends and teammates.
Michael Hutchinson recorded 14 saves in 30:44 before being relieved by Jared DeMichiel. DeMichiel stopped 12 saves for the win. Dainton saved 31 of 34 shots in the loss.
The P-Bruins are back in action tomorrow night at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA as the squad looks to sweep the Springfield Falcons in the two-game series. Providence opens the regular season at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday, October 7 in a 7:05 tilt against the St. John's IceCaps.
