Worcester Sharks News Release

HAMDEN, CT - Tyson Sexsmith made 21 saves as the Worcester Sharks defeated the Connecticut Whale 2-1 in preseason action at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Connecticut on Friday evening on the campus of Quinnipiac University.

Worcester received goals from Ryan Del Monte and Nick Petrecki in a 26 second span early in the second period to lead the way for the Sharks in a feisty exhibition game that featured three fights.

There was no scoring in the opening frame as the Whale held an 8-1 shot advantage after twenty minutes. The Sharks penalty kill was sharp, killing all five Whale advantages. Tyson Sexsmith made several fine stops to keep the period scoreless, including a point blank stop in the opening minute.

After killing of six straight Whale power play chances, the Sharks got on the board with their first man advantage. Ryan Del Monte (1st) deflected a one timer shot by Adam Zulyniak from the right circle past Chad Johnson to give Worcester a 1-0 lead at 3:36. Sean Acolatse sent a nice feed to Zulyniak for the secondary assist. Nick Petrecki (1st) gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead after a steal inside the Whale blue line and a terrific snap shot from 50 feet, top shelf past Johnson at 4:02 for an unassisted goal. The middle frame saw three fisticuffs as Curt Gogol, Nick Petrecki, and Anthony Perdicaro dropped the mitts for the Sharks while Jason Wilson, Chris McKelvie, and Andre Deveaux scraped for the Whale in a feisty period of play. Worcester led 2-0 after forty minutes despite being outshot 15-8.

Jared Nightingale (1st) got the Whale on the board at 15:11 of the third period for their only score with a big blast from the blue line and through heavy traffic and past Sexsmith to cut the Sharks lead to 2-1.

Worcester's record improves to 1-0-0-0 in preseason action.
