Norfolk Admirals News Release
GANDER, N.L. - The St. John's IceCaps broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of power play goals in the final three minutes of regulation as they defeated the Norfolk Admirals, 5-2, on Friday night at the Gander Community Centre in Gander, Newfoundland. The same two teams meet in the preseason finale Sunday afternoon at the MileOne Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland. The puck drops at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
Norfolk received goals from Tyler Johnson and Trevor Smith. Jaroslav Janus played the full game in net for the Admirals and took the loss.
After a scoreless opening period, the Admirals got on the board first 2:44 into the second period. Tyler Johnson found his own rebound in the slot between the hashmarks. He then sent a wrist shot that went between St. John's goaltender Rejean Beauchemin's arm and body. Although Beauchemin slowed the puck, he did not stop it as the puck trickled over the goal line for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.
The IceCaps tied the game at 1-1 with 52 seconds remaining in the second period on the power play. Brian Matte found the rebound of a Julian Melchiori shot and sent it past Norfolk netminder Jaroslav Janus at 19:08.
Garth Murray put the IceCaps ahead 2-1 midway through the final frame after he scored on a breakaway at 8:30.
The Admirals tied the game at 2-2 with 5:03 remaining in regulation. Trevor Smith found a rebound and beat Beauchemin at 14:57.
Back-to-back penalties gave St. John's a five-on-three power play late in regulation, as Radko Gudas was whistled for interference and Carter Ashton picked up a delay of game penalty for sending the puck over the glass. The IceCaps capitalized on both penalties to claim the victory. Eric Lampe put in the rebound of a Zach Redmond shot for a five-on-three power play goal at 17:36. Redmond then found the mark himself for a five-on-four power play goal at 18:05.
Riley Armstrong sealed the victory for the IceCaps with an empty-net goal with 40.5 seconds remaining.
The teams will travel to the MileOne Centre in St. John's, N.L., for the final of three exhibition games on Sunday afternoon. The puck will drop for that game at 12:30 p.m. EDT. The St. John's radio broadcast of the game is available online at www.thisisnewfoundlandlabrador.com.
