Pirates and Devils Tie in Shortened Game

West Springfield, MA - Portland's Spencer Bennett and Albany's Mike Sislo each contributed a goal and an assist for their clubs as the Pirates and Devils were tied 2-2 before having the game cancelled before the start of the third period due to unsafe ice conditions in an American Hockey League preseason game played tonight at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

Donny Maloney recorded the other Pirates goal while Aaron Rome tallied a pair of assists to lead the Portland offense in their first preseason game.

Joseph Whitney tallied for Albany and J.S. Berube contributed an assist for the Devils who are now 1-0-1 during the preseason slate.

Sislo opened the scoring for the Devils exactly three minutes into the first period on a power-play goal. Maloney answered for Portland 41 seconds later, followed by a strike from Bennett at 11:06 to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. With 1:19 remaining in the second period, Whitney pulled the Devils even as the two teams headed to the locker rooms tied at two prior to the game being called.

The Devils outshot the Pirates 19-17 with Maxime Clermont starting in net for Albany and Marc Cheverie for Portland.

The 2011-12 Portland Pirates Training Camp will continue with a contest against the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday, October 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center, where Pirates fans can catch a glimpse of the future stars of the Phoenix Coyotes and welcome in a new era of Portland Pirates Hockey, "Coyotes Style". Following the game a post-game skate, sponsored by Steele Hill Resorts and Mercy Hospital, will be offered to all fans to meet and skate with the new members of the Pirates. Tickets are being sold for $5. Fans can purchase their tickets by visiting www.ticketmaster.com, or the Cumberland County Civic Center box office on Sunday. Pirates fans who are interested in purchasing tickets to the preseason game against Manchester can also support the Gardiner Youth Hockey program in their effort to raise funds for their season. Due to the Kennebec Ice Arena roof collapse in March, the Gardiner Youth Hockey team will be travelling to distant arenas throughout their season and are in need of financial assistance to make their season possible. Tickets to the Pirates pre-season game on Sunday, October 2 can also be purchased through Gardiner Youth Hockey at $5 with $3 going towards their fundraising efforts. The Pirates will open their 19th season of competition, presented by Bill Dodge Auto Group, on the road against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday, October 8th at 7 p.m. The high-flying action will open at home for the 34th season of AHL action at the Cumberland County Civic Center, on Saturday, October 15th when the Manchester Monarchs visit in a 7 p.m. start, featuring a JobsinME.com Magnetic Schedule giveaway.
