CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston scored three times over the last three innings but failed to complete a late comeback in dropping a 4-3 decision to the Rome Braves in front 2,457 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday night.

Rome ends a two-game skid and climbs to 25-33, while Charleston ends a two-game win streak and falls to 26-32. The RiverDogs also snapped a six-game winning streak against the Braves at Riley Park.

A 4-0 Rome lead lasted until the seventh, when Slade Heathcott hammered a two-out RBI triple to right-centerfield to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Zoilo Almonte clobbered a two-out solo home run to straight-away centerfield for his sixth circuit clout of the season for a 4-2 score.

The RiverDogs continued their bid in the ninth against closer Tom Berryhill, as a walk to Rob Lyerly and a single by Ray Kruml put two on with one down. After Heathcott popped out, J.R. Murphy lined a RBI single to centerfield trimming the score to 4-3.

Jimmy Paredes swung at the very next pitch and lined out to right fielder Cory Harrilchak to end the game and give Berryhill his third save.

Charleston was humbled through the first 5.0 innings by Rome starter Arodys Vizcaino (9-3), as the Dominican native gave up just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. The former Yankee farmhand leads the league with nine wins, has won five straight starts and has not allowed an earned run in his last 32.2 innings on the bump.

Robert Hefflinger grounded a RBI single to centerfield in the first against Sean Black to stake Rome to a 1-0 lead.

A third-inning sacrifice fly from Mycal Jones increased that margin to 2-0, while Hefflinger's second RBI single with two down in the fifth made it 3-0. Rome scored its last run on Harrilchak's bases-loaded RBI single in the sixth to make the score 4-0.

Francisco Gil came in from the Charleston bullpen to strand the bases loaded and ended up working 2.1 scoreless frames in his first outing since 2007 after missing the last two years due to Tommy John surgery. Dickson Marquez followed by working an uneventful ninth inning.

Black (4-4) lost for the first time in five starts, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits in 5.2 innings while walking two and fanning five.

Heathcott and Almonte both had two hits for Charleston, while Harrilchak was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs score for the Braves.

The final game of the four-game series is set for Tuesday with a first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Charleston sends right-hander Michael Solbach (0-1, 3.66) to the mound for his second start of the year, while Rome counters with left-hander Brett DeVall (2-3, 3.55).
