Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greenville, SC - For the second straight day, the Augusta GreenJackets got a quality outing from a starting pitcher. BJ Salsbury stepped up and dealt seven strong innings - one day after Jorge Bucardo's eight-inning start - to lead his Jackets to a 7-2 win against the Greenville Drive on Monday night.
Salsbury's one mistake was a solo home run by Greenville catcher Mike Thomas to lead off the 3rd inning to put the Drive up 1-0. After that, Salsbury buckled down to retire eight of the next nine hitters he faced. Salsbury (5-3) got his first win since May 10th by allowing one run on five hits through seven innings. For the fourth straight start, Salsbury walked no one.
Augusta took their first lead in the fifth inning in a rally that started with Hector Sanchez's leadoff double. When Juan Martinez tried to bunt Sanchez to third the throw to third from Thomas went into left field, allowing Sanchez to score the tying run. Nick Liles would later break the tie with a sacrifice fly.
The GreenJackets added four more runs to the lead in the seventh, sending eight hitters to the plate. Martinez doubled home an insurance run while Evan Crawford tripled home two more. Crawford scored on Liles' second sacrifice fly to put the Jackets up five. A pair of Augusta errors led to a Greenville run in the eighth, but the Jackets got that run back on a fielder's choice in the top of the ninth.
Greenville starter Manuel Rivera threw the ball well, but takes the loss after allowing just two runs - one earned - in six innings. Rivera (2-6) yielded just five hits, struck out five and didn't walk anyone in the loss.
With the win, the Jackets are now 8-3 this year against the Drive and are now 5-2 at Fluor Field. Tuesday's game will be the final meeting of the year between the two teams and with a win, the Jackets can finish off what would be a 5-3 road trip.
Jeremy Toole (2-1, 1.97) gets the ball for Augusta in the series and road trip finale while lefty Drake Britton (0-1, 3.45) will oppose for Greenville. First pitch from Greenville will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
