Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The South Atlantic League announced today that Augusta GreenJackets manager Dave Machemer has been selected to manage the Southern Division All-Stars at the South Atlantic League's All-Star Game on Tuesday June 22nd at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC.
Machemer will have the privilege to manage four of his own players on his team's 27-man roster in the league's midsummer classic - Chris Dominguez, Tommy Joseph, Jorge Bucardo and Jose Casilla. In addition, Machemer will bring his hitting coach, Lipso Nava, to serve as a part of his All-Star coaching staff.
In his second year as manager of the GreenJackets, Machemer has piloted his ballclub to the top of the Southern Division standings. The veteran skipper won his 1,300th game as a minor league manager last June in Savannah and is quickly closing in on 1,400 wins.
Machemer becomes the first GreenJackets manager to manage an All-Star Game since 2006 when Roberto Kelly managed the Southern Division squad. The last time a GreenJacket manager was part of an All-Star Game in any capacity came in 2008 when Andy Skeels was named to the Southern Division coaching staff.
Dominguez was the only GreenJacket selected as a starter. He went on a tear in the month of May as his 24 RBI's during the month were twice as many as the next-best run producer. His ten home runs and 41 RBI's lead the team in both categories.
Tommy Joseph will serve as one of the three catchers on the Southern Division squad. Though he's battled injuries throughout the last six weeks, he's still been one of Augusta's best run-producing threats with six home runs and 29 RBI's. In addition, he's handled a GreenJackets pitching staff that boasted the league's second-best ERA during the month of May.
May was also a good month for Jorge Bucardo as the right-handed starter went 4-0 in the month with a 1.26 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 35.2 May innings. Bucardo earned his first complete game of the season and the team's second in a complete game three-hitter against Asheville on Memorial Day.
Despite a week-long stint on the disabled list earlier this season, Jose Casilla has emerged as one of Machemer's best late-game options out of the Augusta bullpen. Casilla has been among the league leaders in appearances all season and he's induced two groundball outs for every fly out this year. As a result, he's been one of the best relievers at getting double play balls all year long.
Machemer and Nava will be joined on the coaching staff by Rome pitching coach Jim Czajkowski and Greenville manager Billy McMillon. The Northern Division manager will be Hickory skipper Bill Richardson. Arodys Vizcaino of Rome will be the Southern Division starting pitcher and will face Hagerstown's Daniel Rosenbaum, representing the Northern Division. Savannah shortstop Wilmer Flores was the leading vote getter in either division.
