Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (30-29) tried to come back after the Delmarva Shorebirds (25-34) scored seven in the first five innings, but came just short for the second straight game, falling 7-6 on Monday night.

The Shorebirds jumped on Josh Smoker (0-6) early in the first inning with a two-run triple by Kieon Pope to score Ty Kelly and Brian Conley for a 2-0 lead.

Next inning, Delmarva put two more on the board. With two away, Gary Helmick hit an infield single to third, scoring T.J. Baxter from second on the throw to first. After Helmick stole second, he scored after a wild pitch by Smoker to give Delmarva a four-run lead.

In the fourth, Steve Bumbry led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. Baxter followed with a ground ball to first, but Bumbry beat the throw home to score on the fielder's choice. Two batters later, Garabez Rosa hit an infield single to short to score Baxter from third for a 6-0 Shorebirds lead.

They continued to score with an RBI single by Bumbry in the fifth, scoring Conley from putting Delmarva up 7-0.

Hagerstown got on the board against starter Bobby Bundy (1-3) in the sixth inning. After a lead-off triple by Hector Taveras, Jeff Kobernus grounded out to second to bring the catcher in for the Suns first run.

The Suns got the bats rolling in the top of the eighth with all hits coming with two out. Hagerstown got five singles in a row, starting with Taveras and Kobernus. Francisco Soriano singled to left to bring in Taveras to cut the lead to four. Souza followed with an RBI single to right to score Kobernus. As Soriano tried for third, right fielder Conley's throw went into the stands to give Soriano home and Souza third, putting the Suns within two, down 7-5 to Delmarva.

In the top of the ninth, Hagerstown got runners on the corners with two outs. A wild pitch allowed J.P. Ramirez to score and advanced Sandy Leon to second. However Jeff Kobernus grounded out to third, ending the comeback just short.

Bundy gets the win after throwing seven innings in his start, allowing just one run with four strikeouts. Brent Allar got his first save after pitching the ninth.

Smoker got the loss after four innings thrown, allowing six runs, just four earned, with three strikeouts. Paul Applebee pitched strong in relief, throwing four innings, with one run charged and four strikeouts.

Hagerstown and Delmarva will play the final game of the set on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium in Salisbury.
