Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - For the second time this season, the Kannapolis Intimidators are swept in a doubleheader as the Savannah Sand Gnats steal away victory in game one, winning 4-3 in 11 innings and they defeated the Intimidators in game two by the score of 7-1.

In game one, a scheduled seven-inning ballgame, the Intimidators (28-30) shot out to a 2-0 lead as Brady Shoemaker hit a home run to dead center and then singled in a run in the very next inning to take that lead in the third. The game stayed that way until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, off Matt Wickswat who went five, the Sand Gnats (34-25) got two on with one out and Alonzo Harris tripled in two runs to tie it at 2-2. The game would then go four innings past the scheduled time into the 11th inning tied at two apiece.

In the top of the 11tth inning, off Darin Gorski (2-2) Nick Ciolli led off with a bunt single and he was brought home on a double by Brady Shoemaker to take a 3-2 lead. Shoemaker was stranded on the basepaths and that would prove to be costly.

Off Drew O'Neil (2-2) in the bottom of the inning the Sand Gnats got runners on by a hit by pitch and two walks to load the bases with one down. Harris racked up his third RBI with a ground out and then Pedro Zepata brought home the game winning run on a hard-hit ball that hit the heel of the glove of Ian Gac which was ruled a single. It was the third time this season the Sand Gnats have defeated the Intimidators in extra innings.

In the second ballgame, Justin Collop started for the Intimidators and went five innings, allowing ten hits and five runs, four earned. He allowed a run in the first and four in the fourth on a three-run double by Pedro Zapata.

The lone run of the game for the Intimidators was a solo home run for Gac, a blast over the centerfield wall to tie the game in the second inning. Gac is now tied for the league lead in home runs with 12. JR Ballinger allowed two runs on three hits in his relief inning in the sixth as the Intimidators fell in game two 7-1.

The Intimidators will look to split the series with the Gnats on Tuesday in a 7:05 pm game with Matt Hopps on the mound; he will be opposed by James Fuller.

Note: The Chicago White Sox selected Chris Sale with the 13th pick overall in the 2010 MLB Draft on Monday night. Sale, born in 1989, was a college junior at Florida Gulf Coast University and a left-handed starting pitcher.
