Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads pulled within a run with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the ninth, but came up just short, 6-5, against the Lexington Legends before 3,737 fans on Monday afternoon.
The Crawdads (35-24) got out to a quick start, plating a pair in the first inning against Lexington starter RHP Robbie Donovan (6-4). RF Jared Prince and CF Miguel Velazquez went back-to-back with a double and a single, before DH Cristian Santana knocked both in with a two-out, two-run base hit up the middle, making it 2-0.
Hickory added another in the bottom of the fourth, moving ahead, 3-0. Santana worked a lead-off walk and promptly took second on a wild pitch. He then advanced to third on a grounder by 1B Mike Ortiz and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by 3B Matt West.
Lexington (29-30) got on the board in the top of the fifth, after LHP Robbie Erlin dealt the first four innings without a run allowed, including 3.1 hitless frames to start the game. Three straight singles to start the fifth against Erlin accounted for the run, which was driven in by CF Brian Kemp, making it 3-1.
The Legends continued the comeback against the bullpen with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. The Crawdads had one last push in the bottom of the ninth, striking for two against RHP Kirk Clark. Santana again started the rally with a double and took third on an Ortiz single. West then placed an RBI base hit to shallow right, scoring Santana and driving Ortiz to third. 2B Travis Adair followed with a sacrifice fly to left, plating Ortiz and cutting it to just a one-run Lexington lead. With West on at first and only one out, Kirk induced a game-ending double play off the bat of C Leonel De Los Santos, and the Legends escaped with the 6-5 win.
RHP Tyler Tufts (0-1), who pitched the seventh inning, was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while Donovan picked up the win and Kirk registered the save for Lexington.
