Lexington Legends News Release

The Lexington Legends survived a ninth-inning rally by Hickory and beat the Crawdads 6-5 at L.P. Frans Stadium Monday.

Hickory led 3-0 after four innings. A two-run single by Cristian Santana put the Crawdads in front in the bottom of the first. Matt West's sacrifice fly drove in the third Hickory run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Legends came back with a run in the fifth on consecutive singles by Andy Simunic, Jordan Comadena and Brian Kemp, and then tied the game with two runs in the sixth. Singles by Jake Goebbert and J.D. Martinez put runners at first and third. After Kody Hinze popped out, Jonathan Meyer's infield single scored Goebbert, and Martinez came home as Simunic hit into a force play.

Lexington took a 6-3 lead in the seventh inning. The three-run rally was triggered by a one-out triple by Jose Altuve. Altuve scored as shortstop Leury Garcia's throw to the plate was late after he fielded a grounder hit by Jiovanni Mier. Mier took second on an errant pickoff attempt at first by Hickory relief pitcher Tyler Tufts. Mier went to third as Goebbert grounded out, and scored on Martinez' league-leading 23rd double of the season. Hinze followed with another double, scoring Martinez to give Lexington a three-run margin. Hinze leads the South Atlantic League with 56 RBI.

Hickory made it interesting in the ninth against Legends closer Kirk Clark. Santana led off with a double and went to third on a single by Mike Ortiz. West singled, scoring Santana to cut the Legends lead to two at 6-4. Ortiz, who had gone to third on the hit by West, scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Adair to make the score 6-5. But Clark got Leonel De Los Santos to ground into a double play to end the game.

Robby Donovan (6-4) got the win after pitching the first six innings. Jose Trinidad pitched two scoreless innings for Lexington, and Clark, who worked the ninth, picked up his 12th save, putting him in a tie for the league lead.

Tufts, (0-1), who was on the mound in the seventh inning for Hickory, took the loss. -------------------------- All-Stars - Altuve, Clark, Martinez and Hinze were named to the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team, the league announced Monday. Hickory left-hander Robbie Ross, a graduate of Lexington Christian Academy, was named to the Northern Division team.
