SUNDAY SPLIT: West Virginia split a twinbill on Sunday at Asheville, winning game one 5-1 in ten innings and falling 8-2 in the nightcap. The Power held a 1-0 lead in the sixth of game one, but the Tourists tied the game against Zach Foster in the seventh. West Virginia plated four runs in the tenth, including three on a home run by Jesus Brito. In game two, Asheville hit three home runs against Maurice Bankston, including a two-run shot in the first, and two-run job in the second, and a three-run homer in the third to account for the bulk of the offense. Jose Hernandez drove in the Power's pair of runs in the first inning with a single.
POWER ALL-STARS: West Virginia placed four players on the 2010 South Atlantic League's Northern Division All-Star team. Ramon Cabrera, Aaron Baker, David Rubinstein, and Nathan Baker were selected by the managers, staff, fans, and media to compete in the mid-season classic, to be played at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina on June 22. Aaron Baker will start at designated hitter for the North, which will be managed by Hickory's Bill Richardson. Hagerstown, Hickory, and Kannapolis each placed five representatives on the squad. RUBINSTEIN ROLLS ON: Power outfielder David Rubinstein extended his current hitting streak to 11 straight dating back to May 27. The right fielder is batting .381 during this 11 game stretch, and has surpassed the previous season-best eight game runs by several West Virginia players this season. Rubinstein's current streak is the longest active such streak in the league, and is tied for the fifth longest game-wise run this season.
SLAM BAM CUNNINGHAM: Jarek Cunningham hit West Virginia's first grand slam of the 2010 season in the Power's Saturday night win. The Power had hit 33 home runs prior to the slam, including 21 solo home runs, nine two-run shots, and three three-run jimmy jacks. The 2009 edition of the Power hit 71 home runs, including three grand slams.
AT ASHEVILLE: West Virginia trails the all-time series with the Tourists 20-22 heading into today's doubleheader, including an 9-10 record at McCormick Field since 2005.
MAY DAYS: West Virginia went 15-15 during the month of May and hit .229, ten points lower than their average in April when they went 9-12. The staff ERA in May, however, was 3.65, compared to 3.80 during the first month of the season. The Power also hit 21 home runs in May, compared to nine during April.
POWER POINTS: The Power were shutout for the sixth time this season on Sunday, surpassing their 2009 season-long total... Maurice Bankston became the first West Virginia pitcher to allow three home runs in a game this year... The Power are 21-20 since Gary Green moved Evan Chambers to the top of the order. The outfielder has a .419 on-base percentage since moving to the top of the lineup... Jarek Cunningham's grand slam Saturday marked the first time this season that a Power player drove in more than three runs in a game, which had happened nine different times.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost to San Francisco 6-5 in ten innings... Indianapolis lost to Columbus 5-1... Altoona surrendered a two run lead late and lost 5-4 at New Hampshire... Bradenton gave up three in the ninth and lost 5-4 at Brevard County.
