Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (34-25) swept a doubleheader from the Kannapolis Intimidators Monday night in front of 2,381 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. Pedro Zapata drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning of game one, a 4-3 Savannah win, with a smash to first base and provided the key hit, a three run double, in the nightcap, which the Gnats won 7-1.
In game one, the Gnats trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, until 2B Alonzo Harris drilled a two-run triple off the base of the centerfield wall to even the score at 2-2. Starter Brandon Moore held Kannapolis to two runs in seven innings. He struck out 12, which tied his own season-high for a Savannah pitcher.
The game stayed tied 2-2 until the 11th. In the top half, Intimidators' LF Brady Shoemaker drove a double into the right field corner against Savannah reliever Darin Gorski to give Kannapolis a 3-2 lead. Shoemaker was 3-5 in game one with a double, a home run and drove home all three Kannapolis runs. The Gnats scored twice in the bottom half of the inning for the win. A hit-by-pitch, and walks to DH Nick Santomauro and RF Cesar Puello loaded the bases for Harris at the bottom of the order. Harris cued a ball to second that brought home pinch-runner Luis Rivera with the tying run. Zapata followed with a smash to first off the glove of 1B Ian Gac to bring home Santomauro with the winning run. Gorski allowed one run in four innings of relief to earn the win and even his record at 2-2.
In game two, the Gnats broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run fourth inning. C Dock Doyle drove home LF Rafael Fernandez with the go-ahead run with a single into left field. After Savannah loaded the bases, Zapata cleared them with a line drive double straight away to centerfield that made the score 5-1.
Starter Armando Rodriguez (3-4) won game two with five innings of one-run baseball. He struck out three and did not walk a batter for the second time in his last three starts.
The Gnats finish the four-game series with Kannapolis on Tuesday night when they hand the ball to LHP Jimmy Fuller (5-2, 1.70) who will be opposed by RHP Matt Hopps (1-4, 5.27).
