RoadRunners Send Mike Mole To San Diego

March 14, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Phoenix RoadRunners News Release

Phoenix, Ariz. - The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL have traded rookie goaltender Mike Mole to the San Diego Gulls in exchange for defenseman Shaun Fisher and future considerations. The deal completes a previous trade with the Gulls for forward Patrick Levesque and future considerations after Fisher failed his physical upon arriving in San Diego last week.

"Mike has unquestionably been our MVP this season and we're very disappointed to see him go," said RoadRunners General Manager and Head Coach Ron Filion. "Unfortunately, San Diego ran into a situation where they were without any goaltenders, and he was the guy they wanted or otherwise the entire deal would have been off."

Filion continued, "Most players in the ECHL become free agents at the end of each season and Mike falls into that category. Our fans can be assured that we are going to make every effort to ensure that he is back with the RoadRunners for the 2006-07 season."

Mole, 23, appeared in 48 games with the RoadRunners and started 44 of them. The Orleans, Ontario native went 15-27-3 with a 3.26 goals against average and a .900% save percentage. He made a season-high 14 consecutive starts from January 8 through February 11 during which he collected his first two professional shutouts on January 10 against Alaska and January 28 at Victoria. Mole currently ranks among the ECHL goaltending leaders in both minutes and saves.

Fisher, 26, returns to Phoenix where he collected 14 assists and 15 points in 33 games after being acquired along with forward Jake Riddle from the Augusta Lynx on December 2. The Detroit, Mich. native and fifth-year professional led all RoadRunners defensemen in scoring at the time of the trade with four goals and 23 points in 49 games.

To fill Mole's spot on the roster, the RoadRunners have acquired rookie goaltender Zach Sikich from the Long Beach Ice Dogs in exchange for cash considerations and future considerations. Sikich, 25, has appeared in 12 games this season between four different clubs and most recently collected his first ECHL victory Saturday in his Ice Dogs debut. The Eveleth, Minn. native earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honors for three consecutive seasons at Division III St. Thomas College and backstopped the Tommies to a runner-up finish at the 2005 NCAA Division III Frozen Four.

Phoenix returns to US Airways Center at 7:11PM tonight as they open a two-game series with the Las Vegas Wranglers. The RoadRunners are teaming up with Radio Disney AM 1580 for a Junior St. Paddy's Day Celebration. Radio Disney performers "RD Frequency" will perform outside on the US Airways Center Plaza from 6PM-7:15PM and on the ice during the first intermission while playing games and handing out great prizes throughout the evening.
