San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The injury bug continues to haunt the San Diego Gulls, but this time it wasn't anyone on their current roster. Tom Lawson, who was recalled to Lowell of the American Hockey League last week, suffered a knee injury that has now caused a major domino effect to San Diego's roster. Exit: Tyler Weiman, who replaces Lawson in Lowell. Enter: Goaltender Michael Mole, acquired Tuesday from the Phoenix Roadrunners.

Mole, in his first professional season, was traded to the Gulls in exchange for defenseman Shaun Fisher and future considerations. Fisher and J.F. Soucy were acquired by San Diego from Phoenix Thursday for Patrick Levesque and future considerations. Fisher, however, failed his physical upon arriving in San Diego. The Fisher - Mole exchange now completes the original deal from last week.

Lawson was re-assigned to Lowell Thursday after the Colorado Avalanche (San Diego's NHL affiliate) acquired injured goaltender Jose Theodore from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for David Aebischer. Lawson suffered a knee sprain Sunday in Lowell's 4-3 shootout loss to Springfield.

Weiman now gets his third call-up to the Lock Monsters this season. In two previous stints, he's posted a 3-2-0 record with a 2.88 goals-against average and .898 save percentage. Weiman has appeared in 32 games for the Gulls this season, going 14-12-3 with a 2.81 GAA, .910 save percentage and one shutout.

Mole appeared in 48 games with the RoadRunners this season, starting 44 of them. The 23-year-old native of Orleans, Ontario went 15-27-3 with a 3.26 goals against average and .900 save percentage. He made a season-high 14 consecutive starts from Jan. 8 through Feb. 11 during which he collected his first two professional shutouts (Jan. 10 vs. Alaska and Jan. 28 at Victoria.). Mole currently ranks third among ECHL netminders with 2,617 minutes played and second with 1,283 saves.

J.C. Moore, Grady Moore's younger brother is also expected to agree to terms Wednesday as San Diego's emergency back-up goaltender. Jared Saron, who served as the emergency back-up last weekend, was released. Veteran Sebastien Fortier will also be out of action for a week after he was re-placed on the injured list.

The Gulls open a three-game series north of the border against the Victoria Salmon Kings Wednesday, with game-time slated for 7 p.m. San Diego and Victoria will also meet Friday and Saturday, also at 7 p.m. All games can be heard on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
