Peoria Rivermen News Release
Cleveland, Ohio. (December 10, 2008) - The Peoria Rivermen had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on Wednesday night at the Quicken Loans Arena. The Monsters were limited to just one shot on goal in the third period and a total of 12 in the game but were able to beat the Rivermen for the first time in seven all-time meetings.
The two teams combined for a season-low four penalty minutes as both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play. Lake Erie netminder, Jason Bacashihua got the better of his former team by stopping 20 of 22 and earning his first win since Oct. 22.
Jesse Boulerice registered a two point night by scoring the game winner and setting up the first. He circled the net and fed Cody Burki at the top of the crease with a backhand pass. It was Burki's second of the season and it opened the scoring at 15:03 of the first period.
A carryover penalty in the final minutes of the first period gave the Rivermen a 58 second advantage to start the middle frame. As the power play expired, the Monsters were whistled for a second infraction giving Peoria an additional opportunity. It was the Monsters instead who capitalized on penalty kill at 2:33. J.D. Corbin made a strong move from the bottom of the right circle and was able to slide it through the legs of Ben Bishop to give the Monsters a 2-0 advantage.
Peoria responded quickly on a Jeff Cowan tally 49 seconds later to cut the lead in half. As Trent Whitfield carried the puck toward the net from the right wing wall, it was deflected off his stick and directly to Cowan for the wrist shot. It was his second of the year and first even-strength this season.
The Monsters thought they had their two-goal lead back with 12:06 remaining in the second as Chris Durno hit the crossbar on breakaway and it was originally called a goal. After a conference between the referee, the linesmen and the goal judge it was determined that the puck never went in and the call was reversed.
Boulerice scored the eventual game-winner at 16:03 on an assist from Chris Mueller. From along the goal line, Mueller shot one off the pad of Bishop creating a rebound in the slot for Boulerice.
The Rivermen put themselves back within one with 12:45 remaining in regulation but never got any closer. Steve Wagner's slap shot from the left point snuck through Bacashihua for his first of the season.
Lake Erie was limited to just three shots in the first, eight in the second and one in the third as the Rivermen outshot them 22-12.
