San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â Randy Rowe scored twice and added an assist, leading the Peoria Rivermen to a 5-2 victory over the injury-ridden San Diego Gulls Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.
The Gulls (15-10-4), who still have five regular defensemen and goaltender Trevor Koenig out with injuries, have now dropped two straight and are winless in their last four games (0-2-2). They remain third in the West, now tied with the Alaska Aces and six points back of the first place Bakersfield Condors. The Rivermen (12-13-4) are now unbeaten in their last six games, all of which have game against West Division teams. They're still seventh in the North Division with 28 points overall.
Peoria dominated the first period, out-shooting the Gulls 18-4 and out-scoring them 3-1. Trevor Baker, Warren Toews and Randy Rowe tallied for the Rivermen, while Mike Garrow sandwiched in a goal for San Diego.
The penalty killing bug-a-boo caught up with the Gulls again early in the opening frame, as Baker gave the Rivermen a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 4:24 mark. After grabbing a pass from Rejean Stringer at the left point, Baker unleashed a slap shot that San Diego goaltender Eddy Ferhi saved. The rebound, however, popped high off Ferhi's pads and landed behind the goal line.
San Diego quickly tied it 20 seconds later on Garrow's sixth goal of the season. Curtis Brown grabbed possession of the puck along the right wing boards and whipped a cross-ice feed to Garrow, who slapped it past Peoria netminder Alfie Michaud.
The Rivermen regained the lead at 12:23 on Toews' first goal of the year. Stringer won an end zone faceoff back to the point where Toews picked it up and fired home a slap shot past a screened Ferhi.
Another slap shot from the blue line led to Peoria's third goal of the first period, as Rowe notched his first of the night at 18:46. Baker had possession along the left wing boards and fed Baker, who did the rest with another shot that sailed past a screened Ferhi.
Peoria made it a three-goal game with a short-handed tally 12:55 into the second. Rowe was the beneficiary again, beating Ferhi high glove-side with a snap shot from the left circle. It was Rowe's second goal of the night and ninth of the season.
Brian Gornick scored a power-play goal 18:11 into the third period, cutting the lead back to two, but Peoria's Trevor Byrne punched in an empty-netter four seconds later to put the nail in the coffin. Stringer garnered an assist, his third helper of the night.
Notes: San Diego is 11-5-2 in its last 18 games... The Gulls are now 10-3-2 at home this season... They are six points off last season's pace, in which they amassed a franchise record 108 points... The Blue and Orange are 1-1-0 against teams outside their division this year. They were 4-3-5 in interdivision games last season... Defensemen Andrew Canzanello (bruised spleen), Nikita Korovkin (bruised spleen), Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder), Sean Murphy (broken thumb) and Evgueni Nourislamov (sprained knee) all remain out of the lineup... Goaltender Trevor Koenig also remains on the shelf with an elbow injury... Defenseman Jason Courtemanche was signed Wednesday. He previously played with the Gulls from 1995-96 through 1998-99...

The two teams meet Friday in Fresno at 7 p.m. before squaring off again Saturday in San Diego, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday is Golf Night and the first 8,000 fans in attendance will receive special Gulls golf balls.
