San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â San Diego Gulls rookie defenseman Andrew Canzanello has been selected to the National Conference All-Star Team, the ECHL announced Thursday. San Diego's head equipment manager Matt Mitchell has also been invited to the All-Star Game, which will take place Jan. 26 in Reading, Pa.
Canzanello, 23, is in his first professional season and is currently tied for second among Gulls defensemen with 12 points (2g, 10a). The rookie defenseman came to San Diego this season after spending most of training camp with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks.
The 5-foot-11-inch, 190-pound native of Rochester, Minn. played the last four years for Colorado College, where he averaged 21 points a season. Canzanello led Colorado College defensemen with 26 points last season and was also ranked second among blue-liners in 2002-03 with 30 points. During his collegiate stint, he notched 84 points and 168 penalty minutes.
Mitchell, 28, is in his fifth season as the head equipment manager of the Gulls. A native of Binghamton, N.Y., he has also been an equipment manager for the AHL's Binghamton Rangers and now-defunct Western Professional Hockey League's New Mexico Scorpions. Mitchell also spent two seasons as the assistant equipment manager of the NHL's New York Rangers.
The 2005 Coors Light ECHL All-Star game will take place Wednesday, Jan. 26 at the Sovereign Center, home of the Reading Royals. The Skills Competition will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25 at the Sovereign Center.
