Peoria Rivermen News Release
Las Vegas (January 7, 2005) â The Peoria Rivermen were frustrated all Friday night long in Las Vegas, and they weren't gambling. Instead, they were getting shut out by American Hockey League (AHL) goaltender Sebastien Centomo and the Las Vegas Wranglers 3-0 before 4,376 at the Orleans Arena.
It was the firs time in seven games the Rivermen were held to less than three goals in a game.
Centomo stopped 11 shots in the opening period, including a point-blank slap shot in the low shot from Tyler Rennette with a little more than three minute left in the session. Centomo continued with another 11 stops in the second and seven in the final stanza for his second shutout of the season.
Centomo played all of last season with the St. John's Maple Leafs (AHL), the primary affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, posting a 13-17-4 record with a 3.15 goals against average (GAA) and a 904 save percentage in 39 appearances.
The Wranglers capped the scoring 7:19 into the third. Jeff Attard, with a Peoria defenseman draped all over him, slid a shot on the ice off the inside of the right goal post. The puck popped back in behind Rivermen goaltender Alfie Michaud near the left post, where Derek Engelland tucked in it for his second goal of the year.
Peoria (12-14-4, 28 points) had its six-game unbeaten in regulation streak (5-0-1) halted in the loss. The Rivermen fell to 6-9-2 on the road. Las Vegas (15-12-4, 34 points) has won four in a row overall and moved back to the .500 mark at home in 15 chances (7-7-1). The Wranglers improved to 7-4-0 outside of their division this season.
Michaud (6-6-2) stopped 25 of 28 shots in the loss.
The fisticuffs told the early tale. David Kaczowka, after a play had broken up in the offensive end and the whistle blown, was skating by the Las Vegas bench and was grabbed by Wranglers ruffian Regan Darby. Kaczowka could not get away and the two ended up going toe-to-toe with Darby in the bench and Kaczowka on the ice. In the aftermath, each was assessed a five-minute major for fighting and a game misconduct. Darby got the extra minor penalty, creating a Peoria power play; the Rivermen were unable to score.
Later, Peoria's Joe Pereira and Las Vegas' Adam Huxley decided to drop the gloves too early, being sent to the box for two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. Just six seconds out of the penalty box, the two dropped the gloves at center ice. The two would scrap again in the third period.
The Wranglers scored the lone goal in the opening period, which was dominated by the Rivermen. Derek Engelland wristed the puck toward the Peoria goal from the right face-off circle and found rookie Dustin Johner at the right side of the low slot. Johner, with his back to the goal, laid his stick out and deflected the puck into the upper left corner. It was Johner's 13th tally of the season and the fourth game in a row he scored.
After Peoria failed to score in more than a minute of 5-on-3 power play time with just less than six minutes remaining in the second, Las Vegas made it 2-0 late on the power play with rookie Travis Rycroft in the penalty box for boarding. Ryan Gaucher took a pass from Chris Chartier at the right point, stickhandled down to the top of the face-off circle, then decided to cut to the high slot and fed Johner, who had darted to the left post from the top of the face-off circle. Johner took the pass on one knee and lifted the puck into the far upper right corner. It was Johner's of the second of the night and 14th goal of the year.
Tomorrow night â Saturday, January 8, the Rivermen face off against the Wranglers in the second of two in a row between the clubs. Game time is 9:00 p.m. CT at the Orleans Arena.
