San Diego Looks To Break Five-Game Winless Skid

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls look for a little revenge and to break a five-game winless streak tonight, as they host the Fresno Falcons in the back-end of a home-and-home series.

SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Falcons have met four times so far this season with the series split at two games apiece. The two teams will clash four more times during the regular season. San Diego and Fresno met 10 times last season with the Gulls holding a 7-3-0 edge.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 72-31-6 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 41-11-3 all-time against the Falcons at the Sports Arena.

LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (JAN. 7 @ FRE): ECHL All-Star Dan Tessier scored three goals and added an assist, David Brisson added a goal and three assists and Shaun Sutter chipped in with three helpers, leading the Falcons to a 9-5 whitewashing of the Gulls. It was a 1-1 game midway thorough the first period, but that's when Fresno took over. The Falcons scored twice more in the first, five times in the second and once more in the third, cruising to the victory. San Diego scored three goals late in the game to make it close, but it was too little too late.

GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (15-11-4) enter the day fifth in the West Division, now trailing the first-place Bakersfield Condors by eight points. San Diego, however, is only two points out of third and has games in hand on all teams ahead in the standings... The Gulls have lost three straight and are winless in their last five games (0-3-2)... During its winless skid, San Diego has been outscored 26-15... The Gulls are 10-3-2 at home this season...

OTHER NOTES: Sean O'Connor, questionable for tonight's game with sore ribs and back, was selected yesterday as the ECHL Player of the Month for December... Andrew Canzanello, who was activated from injured reserve today, was named Thursday to the ECHL National Conference All-Star Team. He will be joined by team equipment manager Matt Mitchell... Guillaume Fournier was added to the injured list with concussion-like symptoms. He joins Nikita Korovkin (bruised spleen), Evgueni Nourislamov (sprained knee), Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder) and Sean Murphy (broken thumb)... Goaltender Trevor Koenig also remains on the injured list with a sore elbow... San Diego has the second-worst penalty killing in the ECHL (77.2 percent)... The Gulls and Falcons have combined for 35 goals in four games (SDG: 20, FRE: 15)...

FRESNO UPDATE: Fresno (16-13-3) begins the day fourth in the West, one point ahead of the Gulls and seven behind Bakersfield... The Falcons have won four straight and are unbeaten in eight of their last 10 games (7-2-1)... After a 1-6-1 record to start the season, Fresno has gone 15-7-2 since... The Falcons are 10-1-1 in their last 12 home games... Tessier, who notched a hat trick last night, was named a starter for the ECHL National Conference All-Star team... Fresno has netted eight short-handed goals this season, tied for the league lead...

TRANSACTIONS: Fournier was placed on the seven-day injured list today, while Canzanello was activated from injured reserve after missing the last five games with a bruised spleen... Defenseman Justin Silver and right-winger Trent Clark were signed yesterday... Jason Courtemanche was released on Thursday... Koenig (seven-day), Murphy (30-day) and Shockey (30-day) all remain on injured reserve...
