Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings drop their sixth straight game, 2-1 to the Alaska Aces in Anchorage on Friday.

New Jersey Devils and Alaska Aces centre Scott Gomez scored his fifth of the season at 3:52 of the first. He was set up on the play by Ryan Moren and Chris Minard. To make matters worse for the Salmon Kings, early in the first period Captain Brad Dexter went down with an injury and did not return to the game.

Salmon Kings Goaltender Jason Stone, who has been on the ice for Victoria for all but fifteen minutes in the last 19 games, played outstanding on Friday, making 36 saves.

But the Salmon Kings kept battling, with less than 5 minutes to play in the period, Salmon King veteran Mike Barrie scored the tying goal on the power-play. Barrie took the Blue Bennefield offering high in the slot, and blasted the shot past Aces netminder Peter Aubry. The goal was Barrie first marker since November 27, 2004 in Bakersfield.

Jason Stone kept the Salmon Kings in the game in the second as they were out shot 14-5, but the Aces did not help themselves either, missing a couple of wide open chances in front of the net.

The third period was a much closer frame but the Salmon Kings were unable to beat Aubry. It was the Aces who did the rest of the scoring despite Victoria's clutch power-play having the opportunity for the last 4 minutes of the game.

The Salmon Kings were fighting from behind again, after Mike Scott scored the game winning goal at 4:01 of the third, beating Stone and the Aces were up 2-1.

On the bright side the line of Finnerty, Leonard and Voltera worked the Aces down low almost every time they were on the ice and they look to be producing the offensive pressure for Victoria.

The Salmon Kings two game road trip continues in Anchorage on Saturday when they look to snap a six game losing streak. Game time is 8:15 p.m. PST. Victoria's next home game is January 18, 2005 against the division leading Long Beach Ice Dogs. Tickets are available at www.selectyourtickets.com or at 250-220-7777.
