
Rivermen Sail Past Stars 5-2 - Dallas Assigns Gagnon, Texas Releases Mouillierat

Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (32-20-3-3, 70 points) were defeated by the Peoria Rivermen (33-21-2-3, 71 points) 5-2 on Wednesday night in front of 3,486 fans at Carver Arena. Peoria defenseman Brennan Evans registered his first pro hat trick to lead the way for the Rivermen. Peoria goalie Jake Allen (18-11-2) stopped 27 of 29 Texas shots to end the Stars three-game winning streak. Stars defenseman Maxime Fortunus and forward Ondrej Roman each scored in the loss, as Texas fell to 3-3-0-0 on the current eight-game road trip. Forward Brandon Segal had two assists as the Stars dipped to 16-12-0-1 on the road this season. Texas goalie Richard Bachman (21-13-3) suffered the loss with 16 saves on 21 shots in two periods of work. Texas will play at the Toyota Center in Houston at 7:35 PM on Friday.
The Rivermen claimed a 1-0 lead 6:39 into the opening period with a goal off the stick of defenseman Brennan Evans. His first goal of the season was assisted by Nathan Oystrick and David Spina. The Stars countered on the power play with five minutes left in the opening period. Rookie forward Ondrej Roman shuffled in a rebound for the 1-1 tie. Center Aaron Gagnon and winger Brandon Segal each had an assist on Roman's seventh goal of the year. The Rivermen regained the lead at 18:29 after Kris Porter's shot deflected off a Stars defender and past goalie Richard Bachman. Porter's ninth goal of the season gave Peoria a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Rivermen made it 3-1 at 4:52 of the second period, after Evans scored his second goal of the night with a shot from the point through traffic. Defenseman Ian Cole fired a backhand shot into the Stars net at 9:08 for his third goal of the year and a 4-1 Peoria lead. Evans completed his hat trick at 15:27, scoring off a breakaway for his third goal of the year and a 5-1 Rivermen lead. Goalie Richard Bachman was pulled after the second period, ending his night with 16 saves.
Texas goalie Tyler Beskorowany started the third period in a relief effort, making 14 saves in the final period. Texas trimmed the Peoria lead to 5-2 at 16:47 of the third period after defenseman Maxime Fortunus beat Jake Allen for his third goal of the year. Segal and Mathieu Tousignant each had an assist on the final goal of the night.
Prior to the game, the Dallas Stars assigned center Aaron Gagnon to the Texas Stars, Dallas' AHL Affiliate. The Texas Stars also announced that forward Kael Mouillierat has been released from a PTO (professional tryout agreement).
Gagnon, 24, has appeared in 19 games for Dallas this season, recording two assists, including his first NHL point (Dec. 6 at Columbus). The 5-11, 186-pound center has skated in 35 games for Texas, collecting 18 points (11g, 7a). Gagnon led the Texas Stars in scoring in 2009-10 with 58 points (27g, 31a) through 77 games. The Quesnel, British Columbia, native was signed by Dallas as a free agent February 2, 2007.
Mouillierat played in six games for Texas over his recall, setting up a pair of goals for two points. In 44 games with Idaho this season, Mouillierat scored 17 goals and assisted on 28 others for a total of 44 points. The rookie forward is expected to rejoin the Steelheads, Texas' ECHL affiliate.
The Texas Stars continue an eight-game road trip on Friday, February 25th at 7:35 PM (CT) at Houston. Texas returns home to face the Oklahoma City Barons on Sunday, February 27th at 5:00 PM.
