Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 23, 2011) ¬" Mikko Koskinen made 42 saves and Rob Hisey notched two goals and an assist as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Providence Bruins 4-1 on Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 21-29-3-4. Providence falls to 25-29-3-2.
The Sound Tigers took a 1-0 lead 4:59 into the first period via the power play. Defenseman Jon Landry signed a professional tryout contract with the Sound Tigers earlier in the afternoon, and the blue-liner held the puck in the Providence zone late in the man-advantage before finding teammate Rob Hisey in the slot. Hisey fired the puck through a screen set by Eric Castonguay past Providence goaltender Nolan Schaefer for his ninth goal of the year to give the Sound Tigers the early lead. Koskinen stopped all 11 shots he faced and Bridgeport carried the 1-0 lead into the second period.
The Sound Tigers continued their impressive work on the power play as Castonguay gave the Sound Tigers a two-goal lead early in the second period. Castonguay freed himself in front of the Bruins net and slammed home a feed from Robin Figren for his fourth goal in seven games with the Sound Tigers to make the score 2-0 at 1:46. Jean Bourbeau pushed the lead to three with his third goal of the year at 8:52 of the period. David Ling would put Providence on the board with a sharp-angle shot at 18:09 after Koskinen and Motherwell lost their sticks on the play, but Bridgeport still held a 3-1 lead going to the final period of play.
That lead would be more than enough for Koskinen who was stellar in net on this evening. The Vantaa, Finland native stopped all 21 shots he saw in the final frame, and Hisey added a shorthanded empty-netter late as the Sound Tigers came away with their second straight win by a score of 4-1.
The Sound Tigers return to action Friday night when they kick off a home-and-home series in Manchester against the Monarchs at 7 p.m.
