Rivermen Drop Wamsley's Debut in Shootout

January 2, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Peoria Rivermen scored with six minutes remaining to force overtime but eventually fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at Allstate Arena. Rick Wamsley dropped his head coaching debut after being named head coach earlier in the day.

Wolves' goaltender Peter Mannino earned No. 1 star honors with another fine performance as he stopped 33 shots and four of five in the shootout for his fifth win in a row. He has backstopped the Wolves to a win in all three meetings with the Rivermen this season and has been named one of the three stars in each of the games.

The Rivermen have now dropped three consecutive games but avoided their first three-game pointless stretch of the season. Peoria, Rockford, Milwaukee, Texas and San Antonio all lost in a shootout on Saturday and the Rivermen remain four points back of first-place Texas.

Both of Peoria's goals scored in regulation were power-play goals to give the Rivermen power-play goals in five straight games. Nicholas Drazenovic accounted for the only goal of the first period when he chipped a rebound past Mannino at 17:57.

The Wolves controlled the scoring in the second period and took a 2-1 lead into the third. Brett Sterling deflected in his AHL-best 18th goal of the season at 2:31 with Chicago on the power play. The Wolves caught a lucky bounce at 9:56 when Anthony Stewart's rebound deflected in off the stick of Bryce Lampman.

The score stood until the 14:00 mark of the third when the Rivermen struck again. Jonas Junland slapped home his ninth of the season from the blue line. Barry Tallackson provided the screen in front and was originally credited with the goal after it appeared to have hit his stick on the way by. Lampman and Aaron Palushaj earned the assists.

As time expired in regulation, both Chris Porter and Spencer Machacek were called from roughing and the first two minutes of overtime were played three-on-three. The two teams traded scoring chances as Peoria outshot Chicago 5-3 in the five minute overtime.

The Rivermen, who were 5-2 in shootouts and had not dropped a post-regulation game since Oct. 30, scored just once on Mannino in the shootout. Palushaj deked Mannino and slid in his fifth shootout goal of the season as the first shooter. He leads all rookies in shootout goals in the AHL. Tim Stapleton and Anthony Stewart scored for the Wolves.

Peoria is now 0-2-0-1 against the Wolves but will have a chance to stop the skid next Saturday, again at Allstate Arena.
