Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - In what can only be called a heavily overdue win, the Springfield Falcons defeated the Providence Bruins on Saturday night 2-1 in front of 3,463 at the MassMutual Center. The Falcons now have points in three of their last four going 1-1-2-0 in that span.

The Falcons were led by the return of goaltender Devan Dubnyk, who stopped 33 of 34 shots on goal. Charles Linglet added two assists and Colton Fretter chipped in with one goal and one assist.

The game opened with some hard hitting on both sides capped off with a slashing penalty to Trent Whitfield of Providence, on which the Falcons were unable to capitalize. Springfield did not give in though as Rob Hisey was able to tally the first goal of the night at 7:37 of the first period. The goal marked his third in the AHL in as many games. Hisey scored on a rebound off a shot from Fretter, who earned an assist on the play along with Linglet.

The Falcons did not let up the attack as Fretter tallied his 15th goal of the season to add to his assist with 2:25 left in the first period. The goal came on a shot that trickled past Providence goaltender Dany Sabourin, who did not seem to have a good handle on the shot. Linglet added an assist on the goal along with Dean Arsene. Linglet's assist was his second of the night and 28th of the season.

Action did not cease in the opening 20-minutes as Kip Brennan and Craig Weller got five-minutes a piece for fighting at 17:39. The period ended with four-on-four play, as Jake Taylor got called for hooking at 18:10 of the first period, and Jeff Penner of Providence got two-minutes for slashing at 18:16 of the first period. Springfield took a 2-0 lead into the intermission as they out shot Providence 12-11 in the first period.

Late in the second period, Providence was able to collect their first goal of the game, which came on the power play, with just 10.2 seconds left on the clock as Trent Whitfield scored on a redirect play in front of the net. Alain Goulet and Mikko Lehtonen each had assists on the goal.

The final period of regulation opened on a power play for Springfield as Yannick Riendeau got two-minutes for high-sticking. At 11:02 of the third period, Rob Kwiet of the Bruins got two-minutes for tripping. Despite several hard shots on net, Springfield was again unable to capitalize, pushing them to 0-7 on the power play for the night.

Although Providence had several third period opportunities, the Falcons shut the door each time on the Bruins. With over a minute left in the third, Providence pulled Sabourin, as Colin McDonald nearly had two goals on the empty net. The Falcons were unable to put one in, but came away with the victory.
