Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - Andreas Nodl had a goal and an assist and goaltender Johan Backlund made 26 saves for his fourth consecutive win as the Adirondack Phantoms defeated the Norfolk Admirals 3-2 Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

All-Star Jon Matsumoto opened the scoring with 15th goal of the season at 5:09 of the first period when he skated out the right wing corner and snapped a shot over the glove of Norfolk goaltender Jaroslav Janus, assisted by Andreas Nodl and David Laliberte. The lead held until late in the frame when Juraj Simek scored a power play goal on a wrist shot from the right circle at 17:04 to tie the game. It appeared that the game would stay level into the intermission, but Nodl beat the clock by scoring with 0.1 seconds left, tipping the puck into the net on a last ditch shot from Joey Mormina. The Civic Center crowd erupted as the Phantoms recorded their second goal of the season with 0.1 remaining on the clock.

Simek scored his second goal of the game at 8:15 of the second period, tying the game at 2-2 and quieting the rowdy home crowd. But Stefan Legein had an answer for both the game and the fans. 89 seconds after the Admirals tied the score, Mormina found Legein in front of the net and the Phantoms leading goal scorer quickly fired the puck up under the cross bar for his 16th goal of the year at 9:44. Adirondack out-shot Norfolk 11-4 in the second period, but could not add any insurance to their lead.

The Admirals pressed to equalize in the third period, out-shooting the Phantoms 14-8, but stellar goaltending from Johan Backlund kept Norfolk from getting back into the game. The Admirals pulled Janus for the final 96 seconds of play, but they could not solve Adirondack's defense.

Johan Backlund made 26 saves on 28 shots to record his 10th win of the season as Adirondack improved to 16-15-2-0 on the year and two points ahead of Norfolk in the East Division standings. Jaroslav Janus stopped 30-of-33 shots as the Admirals fell to 15-19-2-0. Adirondack out-shot Norfolk 33-28 in the game and went 1-for-4 on the power play; the Admirals were 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.

The Phantoms now head down to Hershey for a 5:00 pm game against on Sunday, January 3rd at the Giant Center. Adirondack's next home game is on Saturday, January 9th as they host the Portland Pirates at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center.
