Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ryan Ortiz went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and his second home run of the season, but the River Cats fell to the visiting Tucson Padres by a score of 13-3 on Monday night, snapping their franchise-high 10-game home winning streak.
The T-Pads were in control from the outset, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. They would go on to score two in the third and fourth innings, and five in the sixth, en-route to their 13-3 victory over the River Cats.
Sacramento scored once in the bottom of the second on Ortiz's home run to left field, then again in the fifth when Shane Peterson doubled-home Ortiz with two outs. The third and final Cats run crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh, as Michael Choice drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
Though the River Cats pitching staff yielded 13 runs, only six were earned thanks to five River Cats errors. After Andy Parrino exited the game to begin the seventh inning, third baseman Daric Barton-who usually plays first base-shifted to second base, catcher Ryan Ortiz moved to third base, second baseman Hiro Nakajima moved to shortstop, and David Freitas came in off the bench to play catcher.
Lefty Carlos Hernandez suffered the loss, giving up eight runs-six earned-on 11 hits and one walk with one strikeout in three innings. The River Cats bullpen gave up five runs-none earned-on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Jemile Weeks, Peterson and Choice each collected a hit apiece.
The win was awarded to Tucson starter Burch Smith who permitted only two runs on four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in five innings of work. The Friars clubbed a total of eight doubles, tying the most two-baggers given up in a game by the River Cats in franchise history.
The River Cats conclude their five-game set with the Tucson Padres at 7:05 p.m. on Toyota Family Value Tuesday when PCL wins leader Bruce Billings (13-5, 3.88 ERA) starts opposite righty Keyvius Sampson (1-2, 6.56 ERA) at Raley Field.
