Cubs Halt Zephyrs' Winning Streak
August 20, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The Iowa Cubs snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the ninth inning, and defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 3-0 on Tuesday night to end the Zephyrs' four-game winning streak.
The Zephyrs had tied a franchise record with seven consecutive home victories and were in search of their first sweep of a five-game series since 2001.
Julio Borbon led off the ninth with a walk from Josh Wall. Edwin Maysonet then laid down a sacrifice bunt, and catcher Rob Brantly's throw sailed over the head of first baseman Jordan Brown and into the Zephyrs' bullpen, allowing Borbon to scamper around the bases for the first run of the game.
Two batters later, Brad Nelson belted a two-run homer off Zach Phillips, extending the Iowa lead to 3-0. It was the 200th home run of Nelson's minor league career.
Brian Schlitter struck out two batters in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 18th save.
Neither team mustered much offense through the first eight innings, combining for six hits as Iowa starter Brooks Raley and New Orleans starter Sam Dyson breezed through the first five innings of the game in barely more than an hour.
Iowa put runners at the corners with two outs in the third and attempted a double steal as Raley broke for home when Borbon took off for first, but Nick Green cut off Brantly's throw and his return throw home was in time to nail Raley for the final out of the inning.
The Zephyrs had only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position, when Brantly singled with one out in the third and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dyson before Chris Valaika grounded out to end the inning.
Raley (8-9) limited the Z's to three hits in eight innings and struck out six without issuing a walk to earn the win.
Wall (2-3) allowed two runs - one earned - in 1 1/3 innings and suffered the loss in relief of Dyson, who tossed seven scoreless frames and yielded only two hits in the longest outing of his 25 career starts.
The Zephyrs open a five-game series in Omaha on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., their final road trip of the 2013 season.
