Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - Brooks Raley tied a career-high with eight innings pitched and Brad Nelson belted the 200th home run of his pro career to lead the Iowa Cubs (59-72) to a 3-0 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs (65-66) at Zephyr Field tonight. The Cubs snapped a five-game losing streak and avoided being swept in this five-game series. Tonight was Iowa's first shutout win on the road this season and the team's 10th overall.
The Cubs scored all of their runs in the top of the ninth inning. Julio Borbon drew a leadoff walk from Josh Wall. Edwin Maysonet followed with a sacrifice bunt and when Zephyrs' catcher Rob Brantly fired the ball down the right field line for an error, Borbon came all the way around to score. After a lineout, the Zephyrs brought in lefty Zach Phillips to face Nelson and Brad launched his 19th home run of the season to right-center field. It was the Cubs' first hit in six games against Phillips in the season series and Nelson's first home run against a left-handed pitcher this year.
Raley (8-9) allowed three singles, no walks, and struck out six to earn the win. He matched a career-high for innings pitched that he set two starts ago on August 10 at home against Fresno. Brian Schlitter finished off the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his 18th save of the season. Zephyrs' starter Sam Dyson allowed two hits and struck out four over seven shutout innings. Wall (2-3) was charged with the loss.
The Cubs return to Principal Park tomorrow night to start their final home stand of the season with the first of a five-game series against the Memphis Redbirds, the Pacific Coast League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Game time is 6:35 and the Cubs will have RH Yoanner Negrin (3-6, 4.59) on the mound against RH Scott McGregor (4-9, 5.27) for the Redbirds. The gates will open at 5:05 and the game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:15.
