Padres Stay in Playoff Race with Big Win

The Tucson Padres pounded out 18 hits in a 13-3 win over the Sacramento River Cats Monday at Raley Field. The win helped Tucson gain ground in the Pacific Southern Division standings, moving them to five games back of Sacramento and Las Vegas, the two teams tied for first place.

The Padres scored four runs on six hits in the top of the first to take an early lead. Dean Anna and Brandon Allen started the scoring with RBI singles, followed by two more RBI hits from Scott Moore and Chris Robinson. Ryan Ortiz recorded the first hit of the game for Sacramento in the second when he lined solo home run over the left field fence. Tucson responded the next inning with two runs on Ben Francisco's RBI double and Robinson's second RBI single of the game.

Gregorio Petit's two-run double in the fourth extended the Padres advantage to 8-1. The River Cats added a run in the fifth on Shane Peterson's RBI double to cut their deficit to six runs. The Padres pushed their lead to 13-2 in the sixth with five runs on three hits and three Sacramento fielding errors. The River Cats committed five errors in the game, one shy of a team record.

Tucson starter Burch Smith bounced back Monday after a rough previous outing to earn his fifth win of the season. The right-hander went five innings, scattering two runs on four hits and striking out nine. Carlos Hernandez was charged with the loss, surrendering six runs on 11 hits in three innings. All nine starters in Tucson's lineup collected at least one hit with six recording multi-hit performances. Anna, Allen and Daniel Robertson led the way with three hits apiece.
