Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs (65-65) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Iowa Cubs (58-72) 3-2 at Zephyr Field tonight. The Cubs have lost six straight games in New Orleans this season and 15 of their last 17 at Zephyr Field overall. The Zephyrs lead this series 4-0 and lead the season series 11-4.
The Cubs scored a first inning run for the third time in four games in this series. Jae-Hoon Ha struck out to begin the game, but reached as the third strike skipped to the screen for a wild pitch. With two outs, Ha scored from second on a base hit by Dave Sappelt against Zephyrs' starter Brad Hand.
Cubs' starter Casey Coleman retired the first eight batters he faced to begin the ballgame and didn't allow a run until the bottom of the fourth. Bryan Petersen led off the inning with a triple into the right field corner and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Jensen. That was the only run Coleman allowed over six innings for his first "quality" start. Coleman has allowed one run in 11 innings in two games since moving into the rotation.
The Cubs regained the lead against Hand in the top of the sixth inning. Edgar Gonzalez led off with a single, went to second on a groundout, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ty Wright.
Alberto Cabrera took over in relief for the bottom of the seventh inning and gave up a leadoff homer to Kyle Skipworth that tied the game at two. Cabrera has allowed seven runs in five innings over his last four appearances.
The Cubs turned to Zach Rosscup in the bottom of the eighth. Nick Green led off with a single, Petersen walked, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jensen. After a walk to Jordan Brown loaded the bases, Marcos Mateo came in to face Chris Valaika. Mateo got Valaika to hit a bouncing ball right to Mike Olt at third base. Olt threw home for a force out, but Luis Flores' throw to first skipped past Brad Nelson into right field. Flores was charged with an error as Petersen scored what turned out to be the game's deciding run.
Rett Varner (2-3) retired the Cubs in order in the eighth and the ninth to earn his second win in two days in this series. Rosscup (0-1) was charged with the loss.
The Cubs and Zephyrs wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00. LH Brooks Raley (7-9, 4.42) will start for the Cubs against RH Sam Dyson (1-2, 2.12) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40.
