Altoona Curve News Release

RICHMOND, Va. - The Altoona Curve trailed early, battled back to take a lead, but four straight runs by the Richmond Flying Squirrels was enough to win the game 5-3. The game was the first of a six-game roadtrip for the Curve at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.

The Flying Squirrels got on the board first as Curve starter Jeff Locke allowed the leadoff batter of the game to reach on a bloop single. Then with two-down, the Flying Squirrels worked a walk and an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Flying Squirrels starter David Mixon was excellent early on as he worked three quick innings to start the ballgame, but the Curve tied things up in the fourth on their first hit of the game, a solo home run by Starling Marte his second of the season.

The Curve continued to produce off of Mixon after the homer in the fourth, as Jeremy Farrell led the fifth inning off with a double, went to third on a passed ball and then scored on a single by Tony Sanchez to make it a 2-1 Curve lead.

Despite walking four and hitting a batter, Locke battled in his outing and allowed only one run on four hits. Locke used two timely double plays to get out of jams in the second and third as he exited the game with the lead in the fifth.

With Locke leaving the game, the Curve summoned Tom Boleska from the bullpen and he ran into early trouble in the sixth. Boleska (1-1) walked the first two batters he faced as both came around to score and the Flying Squirrels regained the advantage at 3-2.

For Richmond, David Mixon went five innings and allowed one earned run on just 54 pitches. He was relieved by Ronnie Ray (2-1) who tossed a clean inning and Osiris Matos who came on in the seventh worked two perfect innings for the Flying Squirrels.

The Flying Squirrels were not done scoring though as Matt McSwain came on in the eighth and allowed a leadoff home run to Joe Koshansky followed by another solo shot off the bat of Mike McBryde to make it a 5-2 game.

In the ninth, the Flying Squirrels called on their closer Jason Stoffel and he allowed a two-out walk to Quincy Latimore, a single to Jordy Mercer, an RBI single by Farrell, but in a 5-3 game with two on, Sanchez lined out to end the game. Stoffel earned his fourth save of the season.

With the loss, the Curve are back at an even record on the season.

The Curve (13-13) will continue their road series with Richmond (13-15) as LHP Aaron Thompson (2-2, 3.49) will make the start for Altoona and he will be opposed by LHP Eric Surkamp (1-2, 2.05). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. at The Diamond in Richmond with pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 6:05 p.m.
