B-Mets Squander Late Lead, Fall to Fisher Cats 7-3

MANCHESTER, NH - Mark Cohoon registered another quality start with 6 2/3 innings of two-run work, but the bullpen could not hold a late lead in Binghamton's 7-3 loss at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Friday night. The B-Mets led 3-2 after seven innings before the bullpen melted down blew its eighth save in 14 chances.

Cohoon and New Hampshire starter Joel Carreno pitched to a scoreless duel through five innings before Binghamton broke through for the first runs of the game. Carreno, who was working on a no-hitter, walked Jean Luc Blaquiere to lead off the sixth. Jordany Valdespin broke up the no-hit bid and pushed the runner to third with a ringing double into the right-field corner. Mike Fisher drove in both men with a double to right. Fisher would later score on a wild pitch from reliever Ronald Uviedo, giving Binghamton a 3-0 lead.

New Hampshire (16-9) mounted the comeback trail in the last of the sixth when Darin Mastroianni lifted off for his first home run of the season. Cohoon left a 1-0 fastball up, which Mastroianni deposited over the wall in left-center to trim the deficit to two.

The Fisher Cats closed within a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single from Adeiny Hechavarria, which plated John Tolisano. Tolisano had doubled to lead off the inning. Cohoon exited with a chance to win after the single. He was charged with two runs on six hits and struck out six. The solid outing marked his fourth quality start of his six thus far in 2011. Eric Niesen kept the one-run lead intact by getting the final out of the seventh, which left the bases loaded.

Binghamton's (9-15) bullpen buckled in the eighth, however. Niesen allowed two to reach with one out and exited in favor of Erik Turgeon. After uncorking a wild pitch to put both runners in scoring position, Turgeon elected to intentionally walk Yan Gomes. Callix Crabbe made him pay with a bloop single to left which tied the game. Hechavarria followed and put New Hampshire on top with a sacrifice fly to left. The Fisher Cats were not done, though. Anthony Gose added a two-run triple and Mastroianni drove in the final run with an infield single to score Gose.

Niesen was saddled with his third loss for allowing two runs over two-thirds of an inning. Turgeon was assessed a blown save for allowing Niesen's runs to score as well as three of his own in a brief two-thirds of an innings outing.

New Hampshire outhit the B-Mets 11-2. Binghamton did draw eight walks, but only one of them resulted in a run.

The B-Mets and Fisher Cats square off in the second game of the four-game set Saturday at 1:35 PM. RHP Brad Holt (1-1, 2.96) will start for Binghamton opposite RHP Zach Stewart (2-1, 2.64) of New Hampshire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 1:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
