TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats will meet in the opener of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels had one of their most prolific offense days of the season and cruised to a 16-8 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in game one of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Making his first start since being sent down from Triple-A Fresno 8/4...Worked a scoreless 1 1/3 of relief and earned the win 8/6 at Portland...Victory was his first since 7/5 against Colorado Springs in his Triple-A debut with Fresno...Win was his first with the Flying Squirrels since 6/8 against New Britain...Won in relief for the first time since 5/3/08 while with Low-A Augusta...Went 1-4 with a 9.21 ERA in seven games, five starts with Fresno...Allowed four runs or more in all five of his starts...Allowed four runs just once in 16 starts with Richmond...Opponents hit .314 against him and he allowed 10 home runs in 28 1/3 innings of work...Worked three hitless innings of relief in two appearances out of the Grizzlies bullpen...Leads the Eastern League with a 2.30 ERA and ranks fifth in the league in WHIP (1.18)...Trying to become the sixth Eastern League pitcher to reach double-digits in wins...Attempting to reach double-digit wins for the second time in his career (13, 2008).
Right-hander Randy Boone gets the nod in game one of the series for the Fisher Cats...Suffered the loss in his last outing against Richmond 8/5...Allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings...Struck out two batters and walked two...Lost for the fourth consecutive start...Has not won since 5/22 at Bowie...Is 0-6 with a 6.10 ERA (28 er/41 1/3 ip) over his last nine outings and opponents are hitting .314 (54 h/172 ab) against him over that span...Placed on the Disabled List 6/2 with an ankle injury...Activated 7/2....Finished July 0-5 with a 5.10 ERA in six starts...Spent the majority of the 2009 season with New Hampshire...Went 9-8 with a 3.70 ERA in 25 games, 23 starts...Struck out 90 batters and walked 42 in 129 innings...Made two starts with Triple-A Las Vegas and went 0-2 with a 15.75 ERA (14 er/8 ip)....Went 5-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 12 games, 11 starts, with Advanced-A Dunedin in 2008...Made pro debut with Low-A Lansing in 2008 and went 6-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 15 games, including 10 starts...Named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star...Originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Texas.
STANDING "O": The Flying Squirrels have scored 39 runs over the past four games including a season-high 16 runs on Sunday...It was the club's fourth game this season with double-digit runs (5/27, 7/23, 8/5, 8/8)...The total number of runs is their most scored in four consecutive games this season...The previous high for most runs scored by the Flying Squirrels over a four-game stretch was 29 7/20-7/23...Richmond also posted its fourth consecutive double-digit hit output Sunday with 18, one shy of matching the season-high...The club has combined for 55 hits over the last four games...It's the most games with double-digit hits since the Flying Squirrels notched 10-plus hits in four straight games 7/15-7/18...Richmond's 10 extra-base hits on Sunday were also a new season-high...The club currently leads the Eastern League with a .322 team batting average through the first seven games this month...The Flying Squirrels have still scored the fewest runs in the league (438).
COLLECTORS SERIES: Richmond has won three consecutive series for the first time this season...The club recently took three of four from Altoona followed by winning two of three at New Hampshire and Portland...Since the All-Star break, the Flying Squirrels are 14-10 and have gone 4-1-2 in the seven series that they have played.
THE INSIDE SCHOOP: Utility man Sharlon Schoop went 4-for-5 with a double, home run, six RBI, and a run scored on Sunday...The six RBI were a career-high and a season-high for a Flying Squirrels batter...The four hits matched a career-high...His previous career-high for RBI in a game was four which most recently occurred 5/17/08 at Stockton while with Advanced-A San Jose...Schoop's only other career four-hit game was 8/31/07 against Eugene while with Short Season-A Salem-Keizer.
THE WEATHER MAN: Third baseman Conor Gillaspie has hits in each of his last five contests...The 23-year-old is 8-for-21 (.381) with four doubles, a home run, five RBI, and six runs scored...Since 7/1, he is batting .384 (43-for-112) with eight doubles, three triples, two home runs, 20 RBI, and 16 runs scored...Gillaspie's .292 batting average is his highest since batting .333 three games into the season.
BUILT FORD TOUGH: Outfielder Darren Ford went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a RBI, four runs scored, and two strikeouts...The four runs scored were a career-high as well as a season-high for a Flying Squirrel batter...It was his second four-hit game this season (4/21).
UNBUCKLING THE BELT: In 109 games combined between Advanced-A San Jose and Double-A Richmond, first baseman Brandon Belt leads all of minor league baseball in on-base percentage (.465), is second in batting average (.368), is third in slugging percentage (.632), and is fifth in hits (144)...The 22-year-old is batting .424 (14-for-33) with runners in scoring position in 32 games with the Flying Squirrels and is hitting .392 (47-for-120) overall with runners in scoring position this season.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 141 double plays in 114 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The Flying Squirrels have not gone more than three games without a double play this season...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Flying Squirrels won for the first time when allowing six or more runs in Sunday's 16-8 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs...Richmond is 1-30 when allowing six or more runs...The club is 11-48 when allowing four runs or more.
