Orlando Hernandez Joins the Sens

The Washington Nationals announced today several moves affecting the Senators prior to their game on Tuesday night against the Binghamton Mets. The Nationals have reinstated RHP Orlando Hernandez from the disabled list in Syracuse and transferred him to Harrisburg and INF Stephen Lombardozzi has been promoted to Harrisburg from Potomac.

Hernandez was signed by the Nationals in July and has pitched in six games in the Gulf Coast League. His best season came in 1999 with the New York Yankees, going 17-9 and helping the Yankees win the World Series. He pitched in the big leagues nine seasons, six with the Yankees, one with the Chicago White Sox, then split one between Arizona and the New York Mets before pitching for the Mets in 2007, his last big league season.

He was fourth in the Rookie of the Year balloting in 1998 as a 32-year-old with the Yankees. In 1999, he was the ALCS MVP for the Yankees going 1-0 in two starts against Boston. Overall in 19 postseason appearances, he is 9-3 with a 2.55 ERA. Hernandez was originally signed by the New York Yankees in on 3/23/1998 as an amateur free agent.

Lombardozzi was selected in the 19th round of the 2008 draft by the Nationals. In 110 games with Potomac this year, he was batting a solid .293 with 1 HR and 38 RBI. He was also 20 for 30 in stolen base attempts and had scored 71 runs. In 107 games at second base this year, he had made only six errors. Last year with Hagerstown he batted .296 with 3 HR and 58 RBI and 16 stolen bases. In 127 games at second base last year he made just eight errors. He is the son of former big league second basemen Steve Lombardozzi.

RHP Zach Dials was placed on the disabled retroactive to July 8 and OF Robby Jacobsen was transferred to Potomac.

The Senators roster now stands at 24 active and 4 on the disabled list.
