Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - A four-run first inning set the tone for New Hampshire, as the Fisher Cats strolled past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 11-6, in front of 4,342 at The Diamond on Tuesday night.
Squirrels' right-hander 'Daryl Maday struggled from the outset, and the Fisher Cats took advantage for four runs in the first inning. Maday walked Darin Mastroianni to start the ballgame and Adeiny Hechavarria belted a two-run home run to left field for a quick 2-0 lead. Eric Thames followed the homer with a double to left-center field. Maday recorded the first two outs of the inning, but David Cooper crunched another two-run home run to right field with two outs, stretching the early lead to 4-0.
Richmond's response began in the bottom of the inning against New Hampshire righty Randy Boone. Thomas Neal pulled a two-out double to the left-field corner and Brandon Belt brought him in with a single back up the middle.
The Squirrels got even with three more runs in the second. Sharlon Schoop led off the frame with a single, and Tyler La Torre put two on when he followed with a single. Clay Timpner laced a two-run triple to the right-field corner to cut the deficit to a lone run. Brad Boyer's bouncer to first base brought in Timpner to level the ledger, 4-4.
The Fisher Cats raced back out in front against Maday in the third. Hechavarria drew an inning-opening walk and Thames' second double of the ballgame gave New Hampshire the lead back, 5-4. Shawn Bowman then delivered the third two-run home run of the ballgame off of Maday, to right field, for a 7-4 advantage.
Maday (9-6) departed after four tumultuous innings, having conceded seven earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out four to take the loss in his first start for Richmond since June 29th.
Boone (3-8) settled in to work through the sixth inning without further damage incurred. He earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two in his first win since May 22nd.
The Fisher Cats put the game out of reach with two runs off of right-hander Mitch Lively in the eighth inning. With Adam Loewen and Cooper aboard, Jonathan Diaz cracked a two-run double to the wall in left field, extending the New Hampshire lead to 9-4.
The Squirrels got sloppy in the ninth, and New Hampshire capped their scoring with two unearned runs charged to Lively.
Richmond plated two runs against Ronald Uviedo in the ninth. Boyer contributed a second RBI on a groundout, while Darren Ford brought home a run with an RBI double.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM at The Diamond. RHP Mike MacDonald (4-7, 4.29) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Rey Gonzalez (2-3, 7.49) for New Hampshire.
