Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Missed opportunities and a late-innings rally by the Trenton Thunder was enough to sink the Altoona Curve, 6-3, in the series opener on Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark. Trenton plated four runs in the final two innings after Altoona had tied the game at two heading into the eighth.
Trailing, 2-1, Altoona battled back to tie the game at two in the seventh and it began with Chase d'Arnaud leading off the inning with a double. When Josh Harrison put down a sacrifice bunt, pitcher J.B. Cox (2-0) threw to third to try and get d'Arnaud but his throw was late and the Curve had runners at the corners with no one out. Andrew Lambo tied up the game with a single into center field to bring home d'Arnaud. The Curve went down in order after that.
Trenton immediately answered off reliever Derek Hankins (5-4), who was assigned back to Double-A Altoona earlier in the day, in the top of the eighth. Hankins walked the leadoff man Corban Joseph and then Austin Romine singled to place two runners on with no one out. Joseph advanced to third on a fly ball off the bat of Marcos Vechionacci and scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Brewer to put Trenton up, 3-2.
The Thunder added three runs in the top of the ninth off Hankins to widen its lead to, 6-2. Altoona once again fought until the very end as they plated a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Miles Durham double but Kris Watts flew out to end the game representing the tying run.
Altoona led early in the game behind starter Rudy Owens. Durham, who finished the game 3-for-4 with three doubles, doubled with one down in the second and came around to score on a single by Watts. Owens worked five innings and did not allow a run while giving up two hits and striking out three.
Lambo and Harrison finished the game with three hits apiece and the Curve had a total of 15 in the loss.
Hitting with runners in scoring position proved difficult for Altoona on Tuesday night as they went 4-for-18 in the game and left a combined 14 men on the bases.
The Curve (66-49) and Thunder (69-47) meet in game two at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night in Curve, PA. LHP Tony Watson (4-1, 2.68) will look for his fifth win of the season while RHP Andrew Brackman (2-6, 4.53) will start for Trenton.
Wednesday will be a Wacky Wednesday at Blair County Ballpark with the theme of the night being Sponsors In Wonderland. Have you ever seen sponsored baselines or a sponsored video board? You'll see it and more on Wednesday in Curve, PA.
Pregame radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on flagship ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network. Great seats are still available for Wednesday night's game by calling 877.99.CURVE, visiting www.AltoonaCurve.com, or by stopping in to the box office at BCB.
