TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Harrisburg Senators will meet in the opener of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels won in walk-off fashion for the second time in four games as Clay Timpner knocked in the winning run with a two-out single to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning as Richmond topped Erie 4-3 in the series finale Sunday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander David Mixon gets the start in the opener of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Suffered the loss in his last outing against Akron 6/30...Allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings...Struck out two batters and walked one...All seven hits allowed were singles...Faced the minimum through the first three innings...Gave up four runs and five hits in the top of the fourth inning and threw 41 pitches in the inning...Threw 78 pitches total, 48 strikes...Was 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA (7ER/26.0 IP) over his previous four starts...Six runs allowed matched a season high...Gave up more than two runs for just the fourth time in 16 starts...Failed to go at least six innings for just the sixth time in 16 starts...Is 9-1 when going six innings or more...Ranks fifth among starters in the Eastern League in fewest base walks per nine innings at 10.58 (21/95.1 IP) and is fourth overall in WHIP (1.13)...Is sixth in the Eastern League innings pitched (95.1), is tenth in ERA (3.40), and is tied for tenth in strike outs (70)...Trying to become just the second pitcher in the Eastern League to nine wins (Jared Hughes).
Left-hander John Lannan gets the nod in the opener of the series for the Senators...Suffered the loss in his last start 6/30 at Portland...Gave up six runs on 10 hits in six innings of work...Struck out one batter and walked two...Got the win in his first start with the Senators 6/25 against Reading...Allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings...Struck out five batters and walked one...Outing was his first in the minor leagues since 8/29/07 while with Triple-A Columbus...Optioned to Double-A Harrisburg from Washington 6/22...Was 2-5 with a 5.76 ERA in 14 starts with the Nationals to open the season...Was Washington's Opening Day starter...Allowed 104 hits in 75 innings of work (.327 OBA)...Walked 35 batters and struck out 24...Went 0-3 in four starts in June and allowed 22 runs on 39 hits in 19 1/3 innings...Spent all of 2008 with Washington and went 9-15 with a 3.91 ERA...Struck out 117 batters and walked 72 in 182 innings of work...Compiled 21 quality starts...Made his Major League debut at Philadelphia 7/26/07 (was ejected in the fifth inning for hitting two batters)...Went 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA in six starts with Washington in 2007...Began the season at Advanced-A Potomac, before getting promoted to Double-A Harrisburg and then Triple-A Columbus...Went a combined 12-3 with a 2.31 ERA (32ER/124.2 IP) in 21 games, 20 starts, in the minor leagues in 2007...Was named the Washington Nationals Minor League Pitcher of the Year...Selected by the Washington Nationals in the 11th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Siena College.
WOULDN'T YOU KN-"O"-W: The Flying Squirrels offense recorded 12 hits in last night's 10-inning win over the SeaWolves...Over the first three games of the four-game series, Richmond's offense tallied just 16 hits total and scored only five runs (1.67R/G)...The Flying Squirrels entered the series have having hit .306 over their previous six games with 33 runs scored (5.5R/G)...The club produced 10-plus hits in five of those six contests.
EXTRA SPECIAL: The Flying Squirrels improved to 4-3 in extra innings with last night's win...Three of the club's four wins in
extra frames have come against Erie (6/26, 7/1, & 7/4)...It was the third walk-off win of the season for the club (5/6, 7/1 & 7/4).
TAKING THE BELT-WAY: First baseman Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 in his second game with the Flying Squirrels including a home run, RBI, and two runs scored...It was the third four-hit game of the season for the 22-year-old, who is in his first professional season, and matched a season and career-high...In 79 games combined between Advanced-A San Jose and Double-A Richmond, Belt leads all of minor league baseball in batting average (.386) and on-base percentage (.493) and ranks fourth in hits (107) and fifth in slugging percentage (.635).
NOOOOOONAN: Second baseman Nick Noonan extended his hitting streak to five games in his first contest back since coming off of the Disabled List...The 21-year-old is 5-for-16 (.313) over his last five games with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored...He began his current hit streak 6/15 against Binghamton and missed 14 games (6/19-7/3) with a hamstring injury.
SAVED BY THE BELL: Right-hander Rafael Cova blew his second save of the season in his 17th save opportunity, allowing two runs on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks in 2/3 of an inning last night...The only other blown save for Cova came 6/5 at Trenton when he allowed two runs in 2/3 of an inning...The three walks issued by Cova last night were a season high...Prior to his blown save last night, the 28-year-old had allowed just one run on four hits over 8 1/3 innings and was 4-for-4 in save opportunities spanning his previous six games.
FULL HOUSE: Richmond announced its sixth sell-out crowd of the season last night...It was the 10th time this season that the Flying Squirrels have announced a crowd of over 9,000 at The Diamond...The club is improved to 3-7 when playing in front of more than 9,000 fans at home and is now 2-4 when playing in front of a sold out crowd at The Diamond...Richmond is second in the Eastern League to Reading in both total and average attendance.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 110 double plays in 83 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Right-hander Felix Romero did not issue a walk through 6 2/3 innings last night...Over his last three starts spanning 20 2/3 innings, he has issued just one walk...The 30-year-old has struck out 19 batters over that stretch.
