Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Mike Antonini offered up his second consecutive quality start versus Altoona, but again took the loss after allowing three runs over six innings in Binghamton's 6-1 loss at Blair County Ballpark Monday night. The southpaw tied a season-high by allowing nine hits, but registered a new career-high with nine strikeouts against the Curve's league-leading hitters.

Binghamton (44-40) tallied its only run in the first off left-hander Zach Duke, who was making a Major League rehab outing. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the game with a double to left-center, Jon Malo pushed him up to third with a groundout to first and Nick Evans plated the runner with a single to center.

Altoona (53-30) answered in the bottom of the same frame. Chase d'Arnaud lined a single through the left side of the infield to start the rally. Gorkys Hernandez advanced him to third with a double to left. After Josh Harrison struck out swinging, Matt Hague brought the tying run home with a sacrifice fly to center. Hector Gimenez vaulted the Curve into the lead, 2-1, with a two-out RBI double to the gap in left.

The Altoona pitchers took it from there. Duke faced one over the minimum in three, brief innings of work. Justin Wilson, who was displaced from his start by the big league rehabber, followed in relief and impressed with five innings of four-hit relief to notch his seventh win.

The Curve stretched their lead to two in the sixth. Shelby Ford took a double to the opposite field, splitting the gap in right-center, with one out. Miles Durham chased him home with an RBI single to right.

Scott Shaw followed Antonini and retired the first two men he faced in the seventh, before running into two-out trouble. Hague laced a double down the line in left to get into scoring position and Gimenez drove him home with a single, upping the Altoona lead to 4-1.

Shaw ran into similar trouble in the eighth, giving up a pair of singles with one out before striking out d'Arnaud. With two outs, Hernandez plated a run with a single and Josh Harrison drove in the game's final run with a single to right off reliever Dylan Owen. Shaw was charged for three runs over 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Ramon Aguero fired the ninth to nail down the win for Altoona, which ripped 15 hits, including six doubles.

Evans and Josh Satin both managed two hits, accounting for four of Binghamton's seven hits.

Binghamton looks to rebound in the second game of the four-game set Tuesday at 7:00 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon (1-0, 5.06) gets the call for Binghamton and will be opposed by RHP Tim Alderson (7-4, 4.63) of Altoona. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:45 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
