Aeros Stat of the Night:
. Left fielder Tim Fedroff tied a team-high with four singles in Sunday night's loss to the Bowie Baysox, marking the fourth time an Akron Aero recorded exactly four hits in a game this year.
Aerodynamics.
. Independence Day Blast. The host Bowie Baysox managed a four-game series split Sunday evening on the Fourth of July with a 6-5 victory in 11 innings over the Aeros. Akron dropped to 0-4 on the season in extra inning games, including a nine-inning game in the second half of a doubleheader on May 14th against Reading. It was a back-and-forth contest early as a Beau Mills home run tied the score at 1-1 in the third and Akron added two more runs in the fifth. Bowie catcher Caleb Joseph smacked a three-run blast in the sixth but Tim Fedroff drove in a run and scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings to force extras. After the Baysox stranded the bases loaded in the 10th inning Carlos Rojas drove in the walk-off run with the bases loaded again in the 11th. Aeros reliever Connor Graham (2-4) took the loss while Brandon Cooney (2-0) threw three scoreless innings for the win.
. Idaho Potato. Left-hander Nick Hagadone started for Akron Sunday night at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, and had one of his finer outings of late. Still on a limited pitch count because of June 2008 Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, he allowed one run in four innings with three strikeouts. Born in Sumner, ID, the 6'5" Hagadone now has a 5.48 ERA in six Double-A starts, but has 69 strikeouts combined in 60.2 innings this season between Class A Kinston and the Aeros. He was promoted from the K-Tribe on June 1st and was named the third-best prospect in the Indians system prior to the season by Baseball America.
. MVP Matt. The Eastern League and the Akron Aeros named Matt McBride the player of the week Monday morning for the week ending July 4th. The versatile McBride smashed six home runs in the seven-game road trip to Richmond and Bowie, hitting safely in every single contest with a .370 (10-27) batting average. A native of Bethlehem, PA and product of Lehigh University, he also walked four times, collected three doubles, scored seven runs and drove in nine RBI. He played first base five times along with a game each at right field and designated hitter, and currently leads the Aeros with 10 homers this season.
. Amazing Aguilar. Another pitcher who had success on Independence Day was reliever Omar Aguilar, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers system in March. The righty recorded four strikeouts in two shutout innings Sunday, helping the offense tie the score late. He now has 37 strikeouts with a 1.91 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched in the seventh inning or later this year.
. Purple Rain. The Aeros host the Trenton Thunder tonight for the beginning of a quick four-game home stand. The Thunder enter play Monday with a 51-31 record, the second-best in the Eastern League, although Akron is one of only two squads in the 12-team league to currently own a winning record against Trenton, taking four of the seven meetings so far. Despite not being in the same division, these two teams will play a total of 15 times against each other in the regular season.
