New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Reading's Matthew Rizzotti turned in a four-hit, three RBI performance and Kevin Mahar added three hits to lead an 18-hit barrage as the Phillies downed the Rock Cats, 10-2.
Michael McCardell's search for his first victory of the 2010 season continued as the Phillies hammered the Rock Cats starter for eight runs on 12 hits through 4 2/3 innings.
McCardell (0-10) struggled out of the gates, allowing consecutive base hits to Rich Thompson and Fidel Hernandez to open the game. McCardell came back to strike out the next batter and appeared to have a second out but first baseman Chris Parmelee dropped a pop up in foul territory for an error. McCardell managed to escape the inning unharmed with a line out to right and a groundout.
The Rock Cats ended a streak of innings without a hit that extended from Saturday night's game when Chris Cates singled to right with one out in the bottom of the first. Parmelee followed with another single before Erik Lis delivered another base hit to right. Cates was thrown out at home trying to score before Alexander Soto popped out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
The R-Phils got on the board first when McCardell plunked Hernandez with a pitch with one out in the third. Hernandez stole second and came around to score on Rizzotti's base hit. A throwing error by Cates at short allowed Rizzotti to move to second before Mahar crushed a two-run homer to left. Chris Overbeck followed with a solo shot over the right field wall for the 4-0 advantage.
Hernandez and Rizzotti added RBI singles in the fourth. In the fifth, Q Berry tacked on another run with an RBI single to right that knocked McCardell out of the game. Matthew Williams came on in relief with runners on the corners and Thompson greeted him with a base hit to left-center that scored another Reading run for an 8-0 lead.
J.C. Ramirez kept the Rock Cats off the board until the fifth inning. Yancarlos Ortiz led off the inning with a base hit to right and Mark Dolenc followed with a double to center. Joe Benson followed with a double that scored Ortiz to put the âCats on the board, 8-1. Parmelee added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Rizzotti added an RBI double and scored a run in the eighth.
Ramirez (2-1) limited the Rock Cats to two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out seven.
