North Charleston, SC - Matt Reid scored off a pass from Josh Johnson in overtime to give the South Carolina Stingrays the 3-2 win over the Charlotte Checkers at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"It was a strange game," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But I liked the way we played tonight. We came out with jump and were able to come up with a big play at the end."

The first period featured back and forth play, with both teams having opportunities, both on the power play and even strength. But a long pass by Sean Collins found Chris Chaput behind the defense and he put the Rays up 1-0 with his 14th goal of the season. Josh Johnson and Collins got the assists at 17:25, and the period came to a close with South Carolina in the lead.

In the second period the game continued to be wide open. With chances on both sides and goalies Josh Johnson and Chris Holt playing well, it remained 1-0 until the last minute of the period. At 19:13 Marty Guerin got his 11th goal of the year from Steve Pinizzotto and Grant McNeill. Pinizzotto set up shop behind the net and waited for Guerin to get open in front of the net. Once he did, Pinizzotto found Guerin for a one-timer to make it a 2-0 game.

In the third period the Checkers made their comeback. While already on the power play, they drew another penalty which led to a penalty shot. Mike Bayrack got it by Johnson at 11:14 of the period to cut the lead in half. Just :43 seconds later, Mark Lee got a power play goal to tie the game up at two. With that, the game would go into overtime.

Just 1:28 into the overtime period, Johnson connected on a pass to Reid catching the Checkers on a line change. Reid, a step behind the defense, got the top shelf goal to win the game 3-2. For Reid, it was his 15th goal of the year with Johnson getting the lone assist.

The winning goaltender was Johnson who stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Holt who stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-5 on the power play while killing off six of the seven short handed situations they faced.

The Rays are back in action Thursday night for the second half of this two game series against the Checkers in Charlotte, NC. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M. and the game can be heard on CNN 1450 WQNT.
