PENSACOLA, FL - Greg Schuh, President of the Pensacola Ice Pilots and Mellani Gilbert of Santa Rosa Medical Center presented a check for $12,221.00 to Jessica James, Community Representative for the American Cancer Society.

The Pensacola Ice Pilots and Santa Rosa Medical Center joined forces on January 19, 2008 for the first annual Pink in The Rink, a charity event to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for the fight against cancer. Ice Pilots players wore special edition pink jerseys during the game and the jerseys were auctioned off in a live auction after the game. Other game night promotions included raffles and a silent auction. "The event exceeded all of my expectations and I am so grateful to Greg Schuh and the Pensacola Ice Pilots for joining our community in the fight against cancer," said Mellani Gilbert of Santa Rosa Medical Center. "Together, we gave Hope to many who needed it. With Corporations being like they are these days, it is truly refreshing to partner with a guy like Greg."

Every 2.5 minutes a woman learns she has breast cancer and an estimated 100,000 Floridians will be diagnosed with some type of cancer this year. The money raised for the American Cancer Society will be used for research, education, advocacy and service. It is important to know that the American Cancer Society has a toll free number that people can call and speak with someone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 1-800-ACS-2345, this is the first step for those diagnosed with cancer so that they may register to receive information on the free programs and services available to them in their area. There are times when a cancer patient doesn't need the programs and services, but somebody to talk to or somebody to listen when they need it most. There is also a web site, cancer.org that is designed to give people immediate information regarding their cancer diagnosis. Gilbert added, "Survivors are my inspiration and I am a volunteer for the American Cancer Society because I believe in the mission. I am ecstatic that the event went so well, and look forward to an even bigger and better Pink in the Rink 2."
