Area Hockey Programs Team Up in Memory of One of Their Own

Johnstown, PA - Senior hockey players from eight local high schools are getting ready to lace up their skates and hit the ice in honor and memory of an outstanding young man and hockey player whose life ended much too soon.

The 1st Annual Brad Wess Memorial Scholastic Showcase will take place Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 7 pm at the Cambria County War Memorial. Forty-four players will participate from Bishop McCort, Conemaugh Valley, Ferndale, Forest Hills, Johnstown, Richland, Somerset and Westmont Hilltop.

"This event is an effort to showcase our local hockey talent while at the same time coming together as a community to honor a great young man," says Art McQuillan, Head Coach of the Westmont Hilltop Hockey program. "Proceeds from the event will go to the Brad Wess Memorial Scholarship which will be presented annually. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a local high school senior for academic excellence, community service, leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of the school's hockey program."

Brad Wess died tragically in an automobile accident October 19, 2007. He was a Junior at Forest Hills high school where he achieved high honors. Brad planned to study for a career in engineering after graduation. Brad was also an organ donor, giving the gift of life as his final deed.

"We are very grateful for this outpouring of support," says Chad Cordek, Head Coach of the Forest Hills hockey program. "It means a lot to our team and to Brad's family to have him remembered in such a positive way."

Ray Schmitt, the Voice of the Johnstown Chiefs will serve as the public address announcer for the game.

Several items will be raffled off including Penguins jerseys autographed by Sidney Crosby and a hockey stick autographed by the New York Islanders.

Admission is $2 for Adults and $1 for students.
