Redbirds Lose Pitcher's Duel in Nashville
September 9, 2021 - International League (IL)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds fell to the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate, Milwaukee Brewers) by a 5-0 final on Thursday night. The Sounds have taken the first three games in the six-game series.
Early on, the starting pitchers ruled the night. Both Colin Rea for Nashville (59-52) and Johan Oviedo for Memphis (51-60) owned the first five innings of the game, each tossing five scoreless frames to start off the contest. Rea allowed just two hits in the first five innings, while Oviedo hurled five hitless and scoreless frames with eight strikeouts.
Rea finished his outing with a scoreless sixth, but unfortunately, Oviedo could not replicate the feat. He gave up two hits in the sixth, including a three-run home run to Dustin Peterson, that sullied his final line and gave the Sounds the lead for good. Oviedo did come back out in the sixth and got an out via a strikeout, his tenth of the game (a new season-high for any Redbirds starting pitcher). He finished the night with a final line of 6.1 innings and four earned runs on four hits with the 10 strikeouts (along with only two walks).
From there, the Sounds bullpen locked down the win. Thomas Jankins, Kyle Lobstein and Patrick Wiegel each tossed scoreless relief innings to clinch the 5-0 victory. Nashville has now won four straight games against Memphis and leads the season series 8-7.
The 'Birds did get two-hit nights at the plate from Juan Yepez and Dennis Ortega, along with two walks from Brendan Donovan. He has reached in seven of his last nine at bats dating back to the end of Tuesday night's game.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
