Record-Breaking Bisons Rally for 6-4 Win to Set New Club Mark for Consecutive Wins
September 9, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
A historic victory for the Buffalo Bisons came under some unique circumstances Thursday night at Sahlen Field... but a win is a win and the Herd did just enough before getting a little assistance from mother nature.
In a game delayed 27 minutes at the start and then canceled halfway through the sixth inning, the Bisons defeated the Syracuse Mets, 6-4, for their modern era record 11th consecutive victory. The win, coupled with Norfolk's 6-5 comeback over the Bulls, pulled the Bisons to within one game of Durham for the best record in the Triple-A East.
Both the Bisons and Bulls have 10 games left in the 2021 regular season.
Delayed 27 minutes at the start because of late-afternoon showers, the Herd's offense was also slow to get going Thursday night. Syracuse starter Josh Walker held Buffalo hitless through four, allowing just a walk to Reggie Pruitt through the first 13 batters he faced.
But with one out in the fifth and Buffalo trailing 1-0, Christian Colon got the Bisons attack started with a sharp single through the left side of the infield. Logan Warmoth then drove a 2-2 offering from Walker to deep right-centerfield for his ninth home run of the season. Just like that, Buffalo led 2-1.
Luckily for the Bisons, they weren't done after Warmoth's blast. Rodrigo Vigil drew a four-pitch walk and Pruitt jumped on the first pitch he saw to single to left. With two outs, Otto Lopez continued his propensity for clutch hits when he grounded a single between third and short to cash in a third Buffalo run.
Veteran Tyler White then capped a six-run rally with his 11th home run of the season, a three-run shot to left that knocked Walker out of the game.
The six-run rally proved big for the Bisons as Syracuse got a three-run home run from Travis Blankenhorn in the top half of the sixth inning. However, the rains came down with one out in the frame and the game was deemed official. Bisons had themselves a 6-4 win.
The victory for Buffalo went to Casey Lawrence. The righty improved to 5-2 on the season with five innings of four hit baseball. Lawrence struck out seven and walked just one batter.
The Bisons will go for their 12th straight victory as part of a Honda fridaynightbash! with Fireworks. First pitched between the Herd and Mets is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
