Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds fended off the Columbus Clippers (Triple-A affiliate, Cleveland Indians) by a 4-2 final on Friday night. The six-game series is now tied at two games apiece.
Both starting pitchers held their own on a warm evening. Brad Peacock went 5.1 innings for Columbus (46-52), allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts. Jake Woodford one-upped him, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs on six hits for Memphis (47-53). Woodford has thrown consecutive successful outings for the Redbirds. Last Saturday night, the Tampa native tossed seven innings of two-run ball.
Memphis opened the scoring early when Juan Yepez pummeled a two-run home run over the left-field fence. His 17th home run of the season with the Redbirds powered them to a quick 2-0 lead. Yepez is 13-29 in his last eight games with seven doubles, two home runs and eight runs driven in.
The game remained tight late into the evening, as the 'Birds took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth. They scored a sorely needed insurance run in the eighth when Evan Mendoza brought home Nolan Gorman via a sacrifice fly, and that was all the support the relief pitchers needed. Austin Warner and Jesús Cruz combined to throw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits in the process. The Clippers also left runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to squander a chance to come back.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
