Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders used a five-run third inning to defeat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 11-4 on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Lehigh Valley took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first against JP Sears. Mickey Moniak produced the first run with an RBI single, then scored on a Matt Vierling single.
Max McDowell got the RailRiders on the board in the bottom of the second with a two-run double off the wall in left field off Cristopher Sanchez (4-6). He scored two batters later on a Cristian Perez single to give the RailRiders a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the third, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sent nine to the plate and scored five runs. Trey Amburgey, McDowell and Max Burt drove in runs in the frame. McDowell had one of his best offensive games of the year, finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and four RBIs. Entering the game, he only had two RBIs in 33 games this season.
The IronPigs edged closer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-4, though only one was earned against Sears (2-0). The left-hander threw 5.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out six.
Nick Goody tossed a 1-2-3 sixth, but in the seventh Lehigh Valley loaded the bases with only one out against Brian Keller. The right-hander struck out the next two batters to escape the jam and preserve the lead.
In the top of the eighth, SWB rallied for three runs against Mike Adams. Jonathan Davis brought in two runs with a single to left, and scored on a Greg Allen single to extend the advantage to 11-4. Allen finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base, and is batting .456 in his last 15 games.
Brooks Kriske worked around a two-out double in the eighth, and Nick Green threw a perfect ninth to finish off the fourth straight win for the RailRiders.
POSTGAME NOTES: The four-game winning streak for the RailRiders is their first since they took four in a row from July 15 through 21 against Worcester and Rochester. That is officially a five-game winning streak, but the July 17 contest was twice suspended and completed on August 17.
The RailRiders continue their series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Saturday night at Coca-Cola Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage on the RailRiders Baseball Network beginning at 6:15. SWB sends RHP Deivi Garcia (2-6, 6.87) to the mound, while RHP Adonis Medina (3-5, 5.09) toes the rubber for Lehigh Valley.
SWB returns home to PNC Field on August 31 to begin a series with the Buffalo Bisons. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
