Redbirds Fall Victim to Late Norfolk Rally
August 11, 2021 - International League (IL)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
NORFOLK, Virginia - The Memphis Redbirds lost a tough one on Wednesday night, as the hometown Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate, Baltimore Orioles) scored the game's final six runs en route to a 7-5 win at Harbor Park. The Tides have won the first two games in the weeklong, six-game series.
The game remained tight early, as the teams traded runs in the third and fourth. Norfolk (34-50) got a run in the bottom of the third on a Rylan Bannon solo home run, while Memphis (40-46) tied the game in the top of the fourth via a sacrifice fly from Evan Mendoza.
The Redbirds roared ahead with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by some extra-base power. First, Rayder Ascanio launched a home run over the bullpen beyond the left-field fence leading off the inning. Then, with Kramer Robertson on first and one out, Nolan Gorman laced a triple to the base of the left-center field wall to bring home Robertson.
Alec Burleson put the cherry on top of the scoring sundae in the fifth, singling home the fourth and final run of the frame. Burleson has hits in each of his first six games in Triple-A, going 8-22 at the plate during that time.
Angel Rondon had a quality start for Memphis on Wednesday night. He allowed just two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out seven batters during that time.
The Redbirds held a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, when the game unraveled. The Tides plated four runs on three hits to take the lead for good. Adley Rutschman had the big blow of the ballgame, plating the tying and winning run with a two-run single in the seventh. The top prospect in Minor League has driven in three runs in his first two Triple-A games this week.
J.C Escarra provided a pivotal late insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Robert Neustrom also helped the cause with a two-run double in the fateful seventh inning.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
